Just the one was flowering in the Walled Garden where we volunteer at our Local New Hospital today , mine are a few weeks behind but won’t be long here up the Valley
What a joyous sight to see in my garden today … the first daffodil! I absolutely love this time of year when you see bulbs start to flower, the promise of things to come 😁
Went to NT Killerton House in Devon this morning on our way home and they had the most exquisite tiny pale daffodils just coming into flower there. I bought two pots of 'Minnow' which I'm hoping are the same ones.
I took the dog to the groomers this morning and saw not the single daffodil flowering in their access lane but "a host of golden daffodils", so lovely. It did the poor old, dicky heart good to see. In conversation with the groomer I happened to mention I was on my way to the GC to change the packet of grass seed, the young lady said she had become obsessed with gardening and that she was trying to develop a nature-friendly garden. I asked if she had a winter flowering honeysuckle but she had never heard of it. She is a complete beginner to gardening so I told her the GC had some stock reduced by 20-25%. Whilst at the GC I just had to check out the reduced stock and found a winter flowering honeysuckle, Winter Beauty, so I bought it and gave it to the groomer when I collected my dog. She was so excited you would have thought I had given her something huge. She said it was an early birthday present, her birthday is Feb. 14th. I told her I would have propagated a plant from my own but it would take 3/4 years to be of appreciable size and I might not be around that long! I came home feeling as if I had done my good deed for the day, and I had a clean sweet-smelling dog to boot. I also bought myself a replacement Saracocca and a cat mint for my cat. I knew I shouldn't go back to the GC!
Here's my first daffodil of the year - a single one, variety unknown. I think the bulb got moved accidentally because it's in a different place this year.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
