I think he understands them fully and thus his opposition to them.
A bit of a subtle difference between not agreeing and not understanding perhaps...

From what he has written about rewilding this year, I don't think he has the first clue. He associates rewilding with abandonment. I think he has visited some small garden that got covered in brambles and took against the idea.  If he visited some of the 30 year old + projects around the UK, he would see the vast benefits and the deep care that goes into the land. Cairngorms Connect is a 200 year project over 600 square km. The Carthanians has a project of one million hectares.

To be fair I don't think he was talking about "rewilding" outside of the garden context. Has he expressed an opinion somewhere about rewilding parts of the countryside as being "puritanical nonsense"?

Anyone who "prefers to tend their garden rather than go out clubbing with their peers" is my friend.
Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

If I was up to it, my ideal day would be spent in the garden, then out for a fabulous meal [ still with dirty finger nails ], finally finishing in a great club...... but those days are long gone.

  • I will try to read more about guerrilla gardening and rewinding, but this evening  I just found this, which I think is interesting:

Rewinding sounds great, going back to a better time, but it isn’t what we are talking about.😋

My garden is wild enough I think and I'm not planning much taming of the invasive kind but there will be increased biodiversity if all goes to the plan in my head.

I've just read a report online in which Monty says he's planning to give up one big thing when he hits 70.  He loves his writing and his travel so GW is likely to go.

I thought he was already past 70!

  • I was born on 9 January 1954 Monty is younger than me I can't believe it, now while I am all in favour of these old television presenters moving over and letting the younger ones have a chance seeing what the BBC regard as up and coming talent e.g Rylan Clark and Stacey Solomon I would urge some of the old school to stay on our screens a little longer but that could be because I'm old too.

I tend to enjoy him more on his travel programmes than on GW although he does sometimes come across a bit pretentious on those too.
