I've noticed that hotels often have the bathroom light and fan on a single switch. I always assumed it was to make sure that the fan is on when the bathroom is being used to avoid excess humidity, damp, mould etc, because they typically don't have windows. When you switch the light off there's usually an annoying delay before the fan stops as well.

I think that is the reason @JennyJ, but it is  due to a health and safety thing that the hew ones are supposed to be separate switches, because if you need to isolate the fan for any reason, e.g. overheating/smoke/fire, it is difficult to do that when the light is connected.

We have two separate lights in the en suite, one by the shower connected to the extractor fan, and a separate main light. ( both are connected to an isolation switch outside the room) It’s the pull switch for the main light that makes a really loud click, not too noticeable during the daytime, but quite alarming in the dead of night!

Just deposited 3 bags to the charity shop. One was clothes from MIL, one jigsaws I probably bought there so really only one bag from the house  - but mostly cookery books so good by weight!

    Good for you @AuntyRach.

I took a big painting of a French Galleon (think Frenchman's Creek) I bought over 50 years ago in St Ives. We've nowhere really to hang it here and it doesn't really suit this place anyway. It was a signed limited print so I hope they get a good price for it.

I'm trying to get enthusiastic about clearing my dressing table drawers, they are stuffed!

I did start tidying up my dressing table drawers and am now wearing the hat of shame!

The top one was absolutely stuffed with old make-up, hairpins ? (I have short hair!) receipts, nail files, scissors, false nails, you name it, I had it. Turfed it all out, washed the cutlery tray I keep it all in (an obviously futile attempt to keep it tidy ), replaced what I wanted to keep and threw the remainder away. Couldn't face the 2nd drawer, that's tomorrow's declutter.

  • The Britich Heart Foundation chappy came today and collected 2 boxes of books and some brica brac. There is now space to put more empty boxes to fill with books etc. My decluttering is going very slowly but steadily. Therte are now spaces on the book shelve.
Now, what cn I put in the spaces!

Now, now, that isn't quite the idea Joyce!

Anybody need old fashioned hair pins?

I’ve got hair clips, scrunchies?, and 3 cans of dry shampoo in my ‘hair drawer’, none of which I have used for years. However, I’m convinced that if I throw them out, I’ll suddenly find a need for them.

I've found all these posts very inspiring!  I spent the week going through several areas of the house and currently have two boxes and two bags for the charity shop.  Random kitchen clutter, unused sets of measuring spoons and the such.. six couch pillows that I kept ‘just in case’ when the new couch we got last year came with it’s own nicer set.. kids craft supplies my own children have outgrown, and all sorts.  I'm good about declutterring clothing, for the most part, as I keep a bag in the bottom of the closet for when I find something doesn’t fit quite right or I realize I haven't worn something for ages.. easy to fold it up and then take the bag when it's full to the thrift shop.  I'm not so good with the other areas of the house though!  It’s easy to hold on to something ‘just in case’ - as there has been times when I've found a use for something I've held on to.
