We are so lucky! There is an owl that’s taken to hanging around near the badgers supper, presumably in the hope that some mice will turn up. We can watch it on the cctv camera recordings. So far, all I’ve seen it get to eat were a few slugs, wish it would eat a few more!
After 30+ years of neighbours without children, the noise of kids when 2 moved in next door was annoying for a while but now they aren't too bad. Some of their visitors kick up a racket but that's very occasional.
@LG_, you have reminded me how much a state of 'flux' garden environments are, for instance those trees were serving as noise buffers, and when gone, it is like having to re-set how you experience your space, even if the missing trees were some distance away. It is good that the birdsong can outcompete some of the unwanted sound and help you to focus on something positive. I find that when the birds are about, I am more forgiving towards irritating sounds. I have always wondered what it must be like to live among parakeets. Is it like being in a tropical jungle? Does their vibrant colour make up for things?!
Builders (and their radios!) seems to be a recurring theme here. I always thought there were regulations on when building work can be done, but maybe it depends on where it comes from - 'professional workers'/builders or householders. It is rare to be notified in advance of any works unless it is council-related, more is the pity.
I am sorry to cause you to think of the power mower idiot - I think that would drive me insane. There are far too many power tools about! I have a theory that some people (some!) feel it adds to their 'macho' credentials when using them.
Oh squeaky trampolines - yes, you have reminded me, I used to hear a few nearby. They all seemed to disappear at the same time - maybe they blew away during one of those bad storms from a few years' ago.
I would agree on about 100 foot for the 'usual' noises, apart from planes and helicopters which mercifully are not too bad near me. I think pollution like smoke ( and more occasionally) the usual irritating sounds can carry further, depending on the wind.

We hear the base thump thump thump from Donington download festival when its on. Its 8 miles away. It makes planes coming in to land at East Midlands airport seem quiet. We usually have a background noise from the M1 and the A52, but the beep beep beep from the builders next door has driven me out of my garden this summer.
I used to stress about five years of kids' shrieking from 6am to 8pm all summer and trampolines. Wise heads on the forum said this type of noise is strictly time-limited and it would disappear at a certain point. And so it was. The kids hit nine and they went silent.
@NormandyLiz, that sounds quite peaceful really! Do you find there is a season or rhythm to any noises, so that the general ambience is more 'predictable'? The connection between others' excessive noise and good weather is a sore-point I think. I am referring to those motorbikes. Incredibly loud and disturbing. It does not seem right either, I agree. I am grateful not to have to listen to that very much apart from the odd solitary bike roaring past.

With me it was the other way round - when we moved here we were a young family with older (original inhabitants in the 1940'ish bungalows) neighbours. Then slowly the neighbourhood became younger - both sides had kids - as did their neighbours . Summer was the sound of kids playing and squabbling) - a constant stream of kids moving from garden to garden to play with their friends. Now it's gone full circle and all the kids have moved on and summer lacks that sound for me.
No it certainly doesn't @clematisdorset. They are raucous, drown out the sounds of other birds, have horrible beady eyes and will empty a bird feeder at one sitting ( upsidedowning)
@thevictorian, oh chainsaws, yes indeed...I know what you mean about urban environments. I am wondering if local authorities are enforcing the 'cutting back' of hedges etc from roads? They seem over zealous about doing that near me and the noise just seems to go on and on, especially if there is a run of good or dry weather.
Someone near me has moved to the area and has begun chopping wood on and off for at least one day a week. It is much louder and disturbing to me than I imagined it would be. The sound just echoes and the irregularity of the sounds and then the pauses between, does not aid relaxation....
That sounds awful with the wood-burners and one of the problems - as you say- is that they are likely to be burning all at the same time, in response to the weather. I have noticed that alot of pollution can intrude into the house too, even through a minutely-opened window.
