How far away from your garden do you think noise and pollution has disturbed you?

  • @Nanny Beach, I am glad some of the noise you mention has ceased! I don't mind the pigeons either, I love their calls. I take it Alan Titchmarsh gets outside help in for his garden then?! 🤭

  • Strimmers are fine, but not jetwashers and barking dogs.
I cannot remember the sound of strimmers or jetwashers. I don't think they abound much near me!  I hope you are finding it peaceful. It seems a bit quieter now in autumn here and the sound of the wind becomes more dominant.

Apart from that we can’t even see another house.
Not much traffic goes up the lane,  my previous cat used to sleep in the middle of the lane.
I think myself very fortunate to have this,  if it wasn’t for my dad I wouldn’t,  all the boundaries are ours,  no arguing about who does what with the hedges. Just a corner of a field. Beautiful.
That sounds like bliss! The cat though....! 😊

  • I suppose it is @Ergates!  Thank goodness we don't have to rely on our sense of smell (especially after the ravages of COVID) to detect friend from foe etc.
I am writing this as someone with a heavy drill is not far away and I am indoors by the way....

Ten miles away with the wind! It is strange when something like that happens. A bit discombobulating I suppose 😊.

Alan Titchmarsh was complaining saying people shouldn't use mowers etc on a Sunday.

It is bliss,  it’s beautiful,  I would hate to have to move from here,  let’s hope we don’t have too.

Concorde used to go over our house (ie: my childhood home) every day. My mum loved it and used to dash outside, whatever she was doing, to see it.

I remember growing up in London and everyone stopping in the street and pointing up when concord went past. It was an event to spot it. It flew 1976- 2003.
  • I think for me, nearby intrusions can really grate, along with airborne fumes/pollution, especially on still days when there is no audible or visible wind.

The reality is that on most days, there will be intrusions in the form of noise, smells, pollution. Sometimes I will endure this, but if my nerves are too shredded, I will stay indoors. Occasionally I will wear headphones but it is not the same experience.

There is a 'regular cast of offenders', including 'lawnmower man', 'the constant snipper', 'smelly laundry detergent household', 'loud radio man', 'determined, frequent, smoking group', 'bl@&#y-annoying bonfire-&meat-curing man', 'shrieking holiday-let guests', ' bouncing-ball football fan', 'weedkiller wotsit'. plus many assorted others of similar ilk...🤭

Every so often (more so in wet or cold or dull weather) I step out to quiet and fresh air with just the plants and birds and wildlife for company - and the feeling is wonderful.

I’d forgotten about smells. Someone nearby must have a wood fire that they light in the evenings. Noticed it last night, but didn’t bother me as I do love the smell. We are certainly aware when there is muck spreading going on, but again, only if the wind is in the right direction. We are nearer the centre of the village , so not right next to the fields. Again, it’s just part and parcel of living in the countryside.
I do love to hear horses hooves passing on the road. There is a stable in the next village that raises very tall and posh horses! Sometimes they bring a youngster along on long reins, with the ‘rider’ walking along behind.
