@clematisdorset our local council prefers to use tractors with flails to massacre the hedgerows (devoiding them of all value for wildlife and leaving tattered edges), rather than chainsaws.
I would like to keep my bedroom window open at night -even in the depths of winter. Unfortunately, our next door neighbours like to have a cosy wood fire - even though we're in a smokeless zone. It's even worse when they burn that stinky smokeless coal. You can smell it for about 20 yards in both directions on the street. I haven't complained because it's good to have someone to look after the mail etc if we are away but I would so like to have the window open and breathe cool air when the mosquitoes have gone.
@Ergates, I can just imagine your ex neighbour, unfortunately. There are too many people like that. I am glad things are much better now he has moved. It had not crossed my mind that there may be industrial grade patio cleaners etc in the domestic arena! - Something else to avoid, if at all possible. I would imagine the burglar alarm masquerading as an air raid siren rather tested the limits of anyone in earshot...how stressful at the time.
I do question whether leaf-blowers do any job at all! Are they very noisy? I can't remember hearing one for ages, but they are like the reverse of a vacuum-cleaner so I can imagine...
That is a good point about how the wind can suddenly amplify sounds from different directions. It can be disconcerting. I sometimes hear a neighbour talking - it can sound like they are in my side-return, but of course they are not; it is the wind tunnelling the sound almost around corners...
I am glad the planes don't bother you, but I have to ask, what noise are the owls making? How great you have badgers too! Did they turn up after the noisy neighbour left?!

@fidgetbones, that is awful really. I mean, if it is that bad for you, 8 miles away, it must be crazily-loud. I would feel bad for the wildlife as well. Do you find you can usually tune out the road sound (to an effective degree)? I hope the builders finish soon and that you have a quiet summer next year. There have been summers like that for me and I remember feeling robbed of peace and quiet (and sanity).

I used to stress about five years of kids' shrieking from 6am to 8pm all summer and trampolines. Wise heads on the forum said this type of noise is strictly time-limited and it would disappear at a certain point. And so it was. The kids hit nine and they went silent.
At least the end was eventually in sight! But 5 years....! I think I would have to resort to noise-cancelling headphones if I wanted to just sit in the garden. I would probably hurry through the gardening too if it all got too much. Sometimes gardening in bad weather can be the most peaceful because everyone else has gone indoors...

@steveTu, the contrast must be quite startling for you, especially if the sound of children playing went away rather suddenly. I think many people would envy you! Do you find your attention turning to other sounds instead?

No it certainly doesn't @clematisdorset. They are raucous, drown out the sounds of other birds, have horrible beady eyes and will empty a bird feeder at one sitting ( upsidedowning)
That is so disappointing @B3! I cannot stay with my illusions now! I think Attenborough used to have them in his garden and always sounded a bit ambivalent about them....

Me too. We have drug dealers that idle on most of the corner in their cars. I think maybe in the winter they do it to keep the heating on, perhaps the rest of the time is so that they whizz off if police rock up. The other cohort is workmen in vans - who aren't paying for their own petrol. I do go over and ask them to turn their engine off.
Re fireworks, I thought it was against local bylaws to set these off after 10pm
The arses setting off fireworks in the park all night are not remotely bothered by by-laws. There is security in the park but they often refuse to get involved and say residents should call the police. I guess they are worried about being stabbed by yoot.
The connection between others' excessive noise and good weather is a sore-point.
It's very noticeable here. I love heavy rain. Any warm night and all the Harleys emerge like flying ants from the pavement. They roar over the hill on some kind of London loop.
Though London is a smokeless zone there are no laws forbidding bonfires or use eco-stoves at home that burn solid fuel. Smokeless coal and wood is allowed.
