I imagine not, @JennyJ! I am not sure if it was the combination of cold, still air and the sugar-beet, or just the sugar-beet itself, but even though not totally repellent, I could never get used to the smell and the way that it lingered. I suppose it was a bit candyfloss-ish, but a bit more sour. Very difficult to describe. It was the way it enveloped everything.... I haven't smelt it for years, by the way!

I have just timed it and big planes are going over head every 50 seconds, very low, right over the house. I think they must have moved the flight path again recently. Also, planes are going over through the light - 1.45am, 3am. Does anyone else notice that? So much for the 11..30pm cut off. I admit it's driving be batty.
That is not good, @fire. Do you think it began after the clocks went back? I know the Department for Transport is supposed to apply restrictions on aviation between @23:00 - 07:00.
I sometimes find planes louder during certain weather. Could that be making it worse? Are you going to turn up the trickling pond?

No, I think the flight path changed over the summer. The noise comes through the double glazing, so the ponds don't make much difference. I have the fan on over night, which does help
Yes, I find fans help with quite a lot of 'engine type noise'. I am thinking of an indoor water fountain though, in case it just gets too cold for fans. For now. I am continuing with a fan and the noisier the fan the better of course. I did read somewhere that moving air is warmer than cold air, so fans don't always chill the space in the way I might imagine. Cooling air is therapeutic as long as not too cold i suppose.

If it is too cold for a fan, you can use an itunes track on a loop. There's lots to choose from, so you can find a hum you like. Just make sure it is loopable. Simply repeating a track gives a slight gap between each play, which is distracting.
Thanks @ViewAhead, I might try something like that, but I find I wake up with a dead battery! Probably my rubbish tech.... Might have to resort to the Lifemax machine, but will look into the indoor fountain too. How have the lorries been?

I'm not sure how it works on a phone, but on a laptop, if you click the screen of a Youtube video, it will always give you the option to set that video on a loop. There are lots of channels that offer white and brown noise, falling rain, storms, waves, log fires .... pretty much any noise you want - it's there. Brown noise can be more soothing than white noise. It's a bit like falling asleep in the back seat of a car.

It used to be, back in the day. People say it's going back that way as people appreciate being able to walk to do all they need to do locally.
