How far away from your garden do you think noise and pollution has disturbed you?

This thread makes me realise how lucky I am.
It is fascinating, eye-opening, and also reassuring to hear about what other people are enduring. It is certainly helping me feel that I am not alone etc and I am finding good humour amongst the pain too.

@ViewAhead, I have heard about the 10pm curfew for fireworks, but enforcement is certainly an issue. I did not know about 5/11 and 31/12 being the only two allowed dates. I hear fireworks more regularly than that. I think there are various religious festivals where fireworks always seem to play a major role.

Thanks for your tip on using a fan. I also need something to drown out neighbouring washing-machine and other low, rumbly sounds. I think their washing machine must be positioned next to a shared wall. Do you find the direction you position your fan makes any difference and what about oscillation? Any thoughts gratefully received!

To anyone who might need to mask noises, as it says, the website contains a vast library...

I have tried a few of the sounds, when at my wits' end! Can recommend.

Goodness! 😱  What an astonishing site!  I could play around there for hours.
Yes, I think it is like a tardis: I've barely scratched the surface yet!

  • @NormandyLiz, I know you are not, don't worry. The rhythms of life you describe sound quite appealing, though I know I would find the crop spraying and hunting bothersome too. I would be asking myself 'Surely there is another way?'!

I think the rhythms of the seasons can be much harder to find in more urban areas and it is only my garden that helps me to  connect with all of that. I do think it important to retain those connections.

  • @clematisdorset our local council prefers to use tractors with flails to massacre the hedgerows (devoiding them of all value for wildlife and leaving tattered edges), rather than chainsaws.
That is so sad isn't it. So unnecessary and so brutal.

  • @B3, What an absolute pain! I think some people are not capable of understanding that their actions affect others, so even if your neighbours were definitely aware, there is no guarantee they would take ameliorative action. Having said that, there are some informative flyers about air pollution in existence that are very good for educative purposes...

There are some windows I can never open because of pollution, but it is more important than ever that we all have access to fresh air and good ventilation. Sleeping in a stuffy bedroom is no joke. Would placing a fan in a strategic position near a slightly opened window have any impact? (Just wondering if it would be possible to admit some fresh air while diluting or repelling the smoky air). I have no idea if this is practical or even a scientific possibility.

  • @Fire, re the vehicle-idling, I think I have seen drug-dealers idling too! They seem to rotate and come back every few weeks and of course workmen too, yes, ditto! I expect you get all sorts of responses to such a request....

Re the fireworks - yes that figures. Some parks near me are closed at dusk, but the more open ones don't and then anything goes. I m not advocating locking parks up - I am not sure of the answers to this kind of multi-issue problem.

Re The Harleys and pollution - there are too many loopholes for effective management probably.

But...you are doing something about it when you can - not many people can claim they do the same.

Like @punkdoc, I too feel very lucky.

Our house is in a 3.5 acre plot some of which is woodland beyond which are the only neighbours  .... who are really nice. One of our boundaries is a river which is roaring along at the moment.
We too have owls, and buzzards and herons add to the chorus. And in summer the constant buzzing of our hives of bees.
The occasional tractor, but it's not an arable area so no spraying.

On the downside, there is a gamekeeper who raises pheasants which can be quite destructive in the garden. The shooting season will be starting soon. There is also the occasional hunt in the area.

We grew up in inner city Liverpool .... we have to pinch ourselves sometimes.

I might use this as a family friendly alternative to 'The dog's danglies' :D

Anyway I saw this today and thought about all the noisy lawn mowers https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KGq8JF46dxo  (bad language warning)

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Re fans, I find a ceiling one works well.  If using a free-standing one, placing it between you and the noise you wish to mask is best.  Finding one with a hum you like can be tricky though.  I got a Meaco this summer.  Very highly rated, everyone seems to love them, but ... unfortunately I could hear the engine whirr, which was higher pitched than the blade hum and also not consistent.  It sounded like mosquitoes tapping out morse code to me!  😱  (My brain often divides up sounds into parts, for some reason), so it had to go back.  Luckily I got it from a JL store, so just trotted it in for a refund.  Buying online is more of a faff and very hit and miss.

I do have a small Dohm white noise machine, but I find the sound harsh.  If I put it in the wardrobe, where fabrics act as absorbers, that improves it.

Can you tell I'm a bit of a expert on the topic? 😂
