Meanwhile I figured out that if I darken as much as possible on the iPad, then take a screenshot of the altered image, I can then reapply the filters to get double the moodiness!

Back to the Calendula... I played with it a bit but in the end decided to keep it fairly straight. Again, I'm swayed by what I thought when I took the shot.
The background is lightened more than the flower using layers in Photoshop. Otherwise cropped but pretty well as shot.

These are from an afternoon walk today. They have only been slightly enhanced and the sun is real, even though it looks like an addition, particularly in the second shot!
