That's really not a good option. Gravel is fine if properly laid. I've no idea why someone would put sand under a membrane. That's just madness. I suppose it's too late to go back to the people who did the job?

No I doubt they would do anything after 2 years, I've often wondered why my floors and carpets are always so grubby with brown/orange patches and it's only recently I twigged that it was coming from the sand.
It's quite fine gravel - what's called pea gravel simply because of the size, which can sometimes move a bit more, hence your problem with the dogs, but there's absolutely no reason for sand to be put on the membrane before adding the gravel itself. Very annoying for you, and a big job to lift and try to remove the sand. What a shame, as you should be enjoying your nice space. I'm not sure what else you could do to make it less problematic either.
I only ever use a bigger grade of gravel, because pea gravel can often just be like a giant litter tray. I've never had any problem with it - just laid on prepped ground over a good layer of membrane.

I had a pond created and a gravel area around it installed by a professional landscaper. I don’t remember any sand being used. A very thick membrane was laid first, then gravel on top. I’ve had no problems of any sort. The job was completed 8 years ago! I would ask another company to advise, and if necessary go back to your original company, even if it was 2 years ago.
I've always done my own landscaping of that type @enilorac2 - and that's exactly how I do it. It's quite bizarre. I think you're right - worth getting another opinion, and checking back with the company/people who did the job.

Thank you all for your advice, I think I am just going to have to bite the bullet and get someone to come and sort it for me, even the membrane is coming up and fraying so the more I'm talking about it the more I'm realising it was a bad job done but at an expensive price. I moved into a small village and wanted to give the work to someone in the village, he is supposed to be a landscaper but obviously took the cheap quick way to get it done and get his money.
I'm really sorry you've had such a bad experience. The annoying thing is that it isn't hard to do a gravel garden yourself because the laying of the membrane is quite straightforward, and then it's just a case of getting gravel delivered, shovelling it on and raking it out. When you have curves rather than straight lines, gravel is so much easier because you don't need a professional to cut paving or get it laid successfully. No mortar to deal with either. I hope you can get it resolved.

Thank you so much, I wish I was 10 years younger and I'd have done it with hubby but he had a stroke before we moved so that was a non starter. Never mind, I'll get some quotes and see how we go. Thanks again for your support.

I hope no one else gets taken in by this person. They really are despicable.
