Gravel garden

I have a large gravel garden, looks lovely and I am happy with it BUT the sand that was put down underneath is causing so much work as it is staining/discolouring the flooring, the dogs bring the orange dust in on their fur and paws and it is also staining my grey stair carpet as it also comes in on your feet and shoes. Apart from having a bucket to wash your feet (and the dogs) at the back door I am stuck as to what to do.  It gets worse when it rains.  It wasn't cheap to have done and I really can't afford to get it changed so any advice would be appreciated. Someone suggested a spray on glue but that doesn't last long and I'm sure will only glue the gravel and not what's underneath.

Bit of a tricky one to get round , I'd be looking at resins.
  • Sounds a strange question but should there have been more gravel laid in the first place?
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

It seems odd to me to put gravel down straight on top of sand too.
A proper layer of gravel wouldn't cause problems, but if it's directly on sand....

I had the impression that its a self binding grit/gravel path ? hence the sand / dust
  • The gravel is quite deep and they put a membrane down, then sand then the gravel.  I did hope the rain might wash it away but it just brings it to the surface.  I'm thinking I'll have to take it up, clear the sand and re-lay gravel, I'm not sure the sand actually serves any purpose

Must be something of that sort @Perki. I think we need more info from the OP  :)

Have you got a photo or more info for us @idedm.jm39131?

  • Not too good at tech stuff so not sure how to add pics 😕
  • Just to say it's been down 2 years now, I have to rake it back in place everyday where dogs chase about 🤦

The icon that looks like hills is the one for photos. If you can keep them fairly small it helps with loading them  :)
It doesn't sound as if the product is very well suited to your needs. Is it the thing @Perki mentioned?

  • No not self binding, I'm beginning to wish I'd just had fake grass to be honest.
