I’m relatively happy with my Raj green sandstone, laid in 2017 with sealant applied at the same time. It looks more pink/sandy than green to me, but that’s what was on the spec when we had the garden designed.
The garden designer only gave us a couple of choices: Blanc de Bierges and Raj Green, and back then we weren’t aware of porcelain or other possible materials.
In 2019 and 2020 or so we did some pressure washing (ill advised now looking back) as I hadn’t really known much about gardening at the time.
From 2021 onward I just apply Patio Magic at spring time. In general the areas that are more exposed to sun and that don’t accumulate water/leaves/fallen flower petals look best. Where water collects — in hollows or under pots — the stone is dark/discoloured. I’ve not found it particularly slippy when wet.
It’s sort of ok but in retrospect I think we should have considered porcelain or something else other than the sandstone. Repointing needs to be done now as well…
Thank you very much @Athelas. I remember seeing your garden before, it's lovely! I was advised not to use a pressure washer on my sandstone and I didn't do so for about 8 years, using Patio Magic like you do. In the lower part of my garden, where water collects in some of the flags with deeper hollows I get that same discolouration. Last year I bought a pressure washer and used it tentatively on this area, avoiding the mortar seams and it transformed the stone back to new. The pressure washing does slightly abrade the flags though, making them more prone to algal growth, so applying Patio Magic afterwards is a good idea.
I have raj green patio too. Been down since 2017 jet washed one but I wouldn’t again. I love the quick super clean result of jet washing but I’ve damaged a much older patio doing it every year 🙁 patio magic will be going down nect year. Took these today. We are very happy with it though
@Copperdog I've read that jet washing can damage the surface of Indian Sandstone, so I'll have to resort to other methods like Patio Magic etc.
Been deliberating whether to seal it or not. I don't think I will as I like the contrast in colours between when it's dry and wet and sealing will prevent that. I'll see how it fairs up after this winter and decide.
@LeadFarmer we had an indian sandstone path and steps laid a few months ago and we did seal it. When it's light rain the water does run off but when it's heavy rain it gets wet so we do have the contrast in colour

LTP H20 mattstone @LeadFarmer, not cheap but it seems to be worth it so far🤞
Thanks for that. I have previously used Resiblock on my block paved driveway which is a brilliant sealant, but not cheap either. I'm still torn between sealing or not.

Although an old photo, these are our patios concrete paving stones that have been here since we moved in 16yrs ago, which I have never liked.
The other day I lifted them all up ready for the new patio to be laid..
They weighed a tonne..
And so the digging out for the new patio begins, with the rain not helping..

I've rotated your photos for you..
