I think @AnniD has hit the nail ( or the Like button ) on the head. It can be a quick way of saying Thanks if short of time/ a Congrats on a lovely photo or agreeing with advice given by another. I freely admit I didn't go for it on the poll at the time but it has proved a handy tool. It is always up to individual posters to treat it in a competitive way or not - I don't expect many get that excited
I agree with @philippasmith2 - as @AnniD says, it's handy if someone has posted a nice pic or similar [and I always appreciate that too] but you don't feel it necessary to add anything else to a conversation. I also agree with @Emptyheadtime - it can be a good way of judging advice. I wasn't keen on it being introduced, but it's quite a good feature, and I reckon most people use it in the way it was intended. You'd have to be pretty shallow if you only ever looked at the number of likes you got about something in order to feel justified in your position on a forum of any kind.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I'm in agreement with you@AnniD. I think the like button is a nice idea to appreciate someone's hard work, artistic flair and all sorts of other things that appeal........@BenCotto your little brick house in my case!
The whole truth is an instrument that can only be played by an expert.
I think it's a good feature to have, as explained by posts here. I don't get likes often, but it doesn't bother me at all. As long as I upset nobody in what I post, that's fine by me.
99.9% on here deserve "likes" , those posting for the first time, those forever answering queries and those just reading. My "likes" (and many thanks) to all being helpful!
Yorkshire, ex Italy and North East coast. Growing too old for it!
The like button is a whole lot handier than writing 'nice pic' ten times or hunting around for the green with envy emoji when I'm viewing the garden gallery thread. If I get the odd like I tend to look on it as a sign of agreement/support for something I've said. I like it.
Nothing wrong with showing appreciation for people's contributions...it's only a few sour people that somehow have an issue with it 🤣 who cares, frankly.
