We have a small town near here called Strathaven. The majority of the many places up here that have 'strath' in their name are pronounced as it's written.
Strathaven isn't. It's 'Stray' ven.  It mainly came about because the name gets shortened, so the 'the' part is removed.
Personally, I think we just do it to annoy tourists...

I always thought it was Lawnston too.  It certainly was when my then SIL lived near there and we got the Launceston bus with tickets to Lawnston.

But names like Featherstonehaugh (Fanshaw) and Cholmondeley (Chumly) make me laugh as it seems the posher you are the less likely to be able to pronounce all your syllables.

And I'm never sure whether other places called Magdalen should be pronounced as in Mary or as in the Oxford college.

Featherstonehaugh is a bit of a myth. Apparently almost everyone with that name, and there aren’t many of them, go for the full batch of syllables and not Fanshaw.

Anyone fancy having a go at Kilconquhar in Fife?

From memory I think the locals say K'n ukk ar.
We nearly bought a house there.

I've always thought it was Konokar, or Kononkar, but I don't know anyone from 'over there'.

    Probably a good idea you didn't buy a house @Bee witched  :D

    Hi @Fairygirl,

We should have bought it ... it would be worth a fortune now!
We could just about afford it ... but would have had no money left for furniture.
    Or food  :#

I know the feeling - having nothing left once you buy. Been there - more often than I'd like  :)
Hope your current location is better though - I get the impression you're happy where you are  :)

Yep ... we just love the Borders .... been here over 20 years now ... and plan to stay.

We built this house, and the garden is still work in progress .... but who ever says their garden is finished?

Hope all is good with you.

All good @Bee witched - thanks. Hope all is fine with you too   :)
Gardens are never really finished, as you say. I'm always shifting stuff around or adding bits and pieces.
