It was just the ends - the round metal bit, something like this:
The above is a steering arm for an Austin 7 - one of which I used to own.
Haven't the faintest idea if I'm anywhere near the mark but it was just the end shape that gave me the idea.
On the other hand, please don't assume that I'm right and clout it with a sledgehammer or saw it apart because if I'm wrong the result might well turn out to be somewhat unpleasant!
Inherited an amazing garden in Taunton, Somerset, stuffed with wonderful plants, shrubs, trees and creatures
@Escapetothegarden, no real idea what it is, but if you know any electricians they can test to make sure there isn't live current, just in case it's buried electrical conduit.
There is also this a bit further down and in a different area.. thought it was for a washing line but it seems to be quite wide…
This looks like a dead base for a rotary washing line. I put a new one into my garden when I moved here. Eventually it rusted through and blew over at ground level so I had to dig it out and replace it with a new one. The old base looked exactly like your pic.
@Joyce Goldenlily thank you ☺️ I think the size of the base bit threw me a bit!
@Loxley Ah, the last photo has two pipes out of that joint, which is similar to mine… I hadn’t come across that (only single vertical pipes) so that’s a strong probability for sure, thank you 👍

Definitely not sawing or anything 🙂 I guess that would be quite a severe method for weed removal ☺️
