What on earth is this? (Looks like a metal pipe thing)

Hello,

Does anyone recognise what this could be? Don’t think it’s a gas pipe (not that I know what they look like anyway) but I was moving a small flat rock and it was underneath (have lived here five years lol 👀)

Thanks

I agree it looks like a metal pipe thing but can't help beyond that.  Have you tried tracing the route of the pipe?

    Ask a neighbour.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

Try digging around it gently, to see what it's actually made of - and yes, it's routing.
We have electricity routing from house to garage.

It bends at 90 degrees on its right going down into the soil, on the left it seems to go downwards.

Have been Googling but not come across a similar image.

@rowlandscastle444 I did notice someone had maybe dug into it as there appears to be a mark but it doesn’t seem soft enough to be lead although I’ll have a scratch…

I've got one too. I assume someone had a shed years ago, and it was something to do with that.
  • There is also this a bit further down and in a different area.. thought it was for a washing line but it seems to be quite wide…

The first thing might be an earthing rod, the second object looks like an old rotary clothes line base!

Oh ok - but it seems to go in both directions not just stick upwards if you understand - do earthing rods do that? Maybe the bit on the top is missing and it’s connecting two different areas?

Yes thought it might be a base - didn’t realise that it went out so far… kind of tempted to see how far… the material looks chalky and has one or two pebbles in it…

I wondered whether at one time this has been one end of a washing line, with the metal pole cut down, then grassed over. You may find a second one somewhere.
