What on earth is this? (Looks like a metal pipe thing)

  • Isn’t it funny how in my heavily compacted and clay garden, I have deep cracks and patchy grass yet over this ‘concreted’ bit the grass grows happily.

Yes, I scraped it away, regretting it now…
  • @rowlandscastle444 I’m not going to be able to rest now until I find the potential second one!

I was Googling images and read something about an air raid shelter… in ref to the first ‘pipe’ - that would be fun!

We used to have an air raid shelter in our previous garden. It also had a high washing line, with two old scaffolding poles set in concrete, alongside the two ends of a concrete path.
  • Here's a photo of our old garden, showing the old washing line poles.
It was a long narrow garden but it was our first!!

  • @rowlandscastle444 that’s brilliant!

My garden is long and thin as well (Edwardian house)
  • Hi @Escapetothegarden
Our old house was a 1910 terraced place. Lived there for 13 years, until we could upsize to a larger 1930s house, with a shorter, but wider, garden.
Now planning to move on again. Downsizing, hopefully to a bungalow.

But the garden in the picture threw up various challenges, and looking at Google maps, I see that the line is still there.
  • We were quite fortunate, we adopted a more mature garden with slightly developed spaces - too thin though and could do with more shrubs!
  • Any joy with identifying the original item, or finding more unusual things, @Escapetothegarden
  • @rowlandscastle444 thank you, not yet, was distracted by planting a shrub - which with a toddler took a large chunk of the day!

I’m thinking maybe I’ll have a think on it on the weekend- was hoping my leaving it up others may recognise it!
  • Just something of an off-beat suggestion, but could it possible be part of some machine?

I have visions of someone having dismembered a car or some mechanical device and buried the parts, so the things that look like pipes might be arms/rods - perhaps from a steering rack?

Only a thought and probably way off the mark!
Inherited an amazing garden in Taunton, Somerset, stuffed with wonderful plants, shrubs, trees and creatures
