Not sure if this has been mentioned. It has a message board, so maybe someone there may have some old recipes.

  • the biggest problem knowing were to look.
searched google, bing and Imperial war museum
    are all dead ends,
You are looking in the wrong places. Try White Magic for herbal recipes.
None of them existed when people were trying to save the population from starving.
Stop gap advice was offered in informal sources where ordinary people were likely to see them so newspapers etc were used, to light the fire after reading.
A lot of the recipes were so revolting, once made and eaten, no one wanted to keep them to use again, due to the substitute ingredients.
Great Granny's home recipe books and cooks of large houses where info. was recorded for those who followed in their footsteps is where you will find old recipes for everything, from furniture polish, face cream, to pickled eggs in Isinglass. Yuck, it stinks and tips to stop children from biting their nails. Sulphur painted onto their nails, I remember Parishes Food for anemia, Scotts Emulsion, no idea what it was for but I liked it, Syrup of Figs, to keep things moving, Lemon and Honey, for sore throats, the juice from sliced onions sprinkled with sugar and steeped overnight, again for sore throats. Dolly blue bags rubbed on stings. Goose fat and flannelette for chests etc. etc.  etc.

Go to the British Newspaper archives and you will find your newspaper there. I will send you a bill for my fees. The rest you can do for yourself without challenging us.

Were any of the current posters on the old BBC Gardening forum?  If so, you might remember the arch troll/WUM, Grid, who had perfected the art of winding up other posters.  There is, perhaps, a certain resonance here with WG .  .  .
