    We are not allowed bonfires here, largely because of the dangers of fire spreading when sparks hit grass or undergrowth parched by drought.   We're still allowed to burn wood indoors and we save the ash for the compost heap or for direct application round fruit trees.

  • I seem to remember some of the allotmenteers packing ‘turves’ from edging paths etc over the fire of cabbage stalks et. To keep it smouldering slowly ensuring that everything was reduced to ashes.
