I actually hated Rab C, although Gregor Fisher's a nice bloke - not like the character at all. Two Doors down is brilliant if you haven't seen that. If you like Still Game or Chewin' the Fat, you'd like that. I'm just going to say, if you have seen it - the son's boyfriend and the Jonah Louie Christmas song is a big favourite in our house. That's a problem many folk have @Obelixx - the speed talking. When people haven't seen each other for a while, they tend to speak much more rapidly, Glaswegians in particular, which leads to difficulty for others who aren't 'natives'
@Simone_in_Wiltshire the programme was shown in in England, in its repeat slot early on Sunday morning. Worth setting a record if it gets bumped for "sport" again.
I just watched the latest episode of Beechgrove Garden and was fascinated by the mixed species hedge in the garden Carole visited. Has anyone ever tried creating this type of hedge? I'm wondering if it was created by taking advantage of existing saplings, planting specific trees, or a mixture of both.

Yes, I planted one here, mixed species of UK natives along a 25 metre boundary. I went for 50% hawthorn, 15% dog rose, 15% guelder rose, 10% hazel and 10% field maple. No evergreens in that mix but you could always add holly for example. There are nurseries here in the UK that will offer you suggested or custom mixes like this one local to me that I used (link: Buy Mixed Native Hedging Plants | English & British Hedges | Hopes Grove Nurseries ..I'm not plugging them - there are plenty of others which I imagine are just as good).
I would expect you must have plenty of these available in the US (though I have noticed that American gardens seem to have far less hedges or even fences than we do - at least front gardens in the states I've visited)
I watched the repeat this morning and was quite underwhelmed with it. A hanging terracotta pot with no mention of drainage, Callum showing someone how to fill a raised bed where you could see the timber was already rotting and no mention of lining the wood before filling. I think the program has lost it's way.
I was surprised to see gardeners recommending burning vegetable stems. It seems a waste.
Our village allotmenteers used to burn them (and piles of dried perennial weeds etc) once a year in the late autumn and use the ash as a source of potash for fruit bushes … so not a waste at all. 😊

@JennyJ - I can understand that
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
I ♥ my garden.
