I haven't got the answer about stability either @Nollie you can see I have a temporary stake which was there to pull the other one vertical during a recent windy spell. I wish I had gone for a different umbrella supported by a 4 sided obelisk but I didn't like the look of those and I can't imagine I can easily put one on now. Also my Standard is not a full height standard so without digging a huge amount below soil level I can't use one anyway. The green coated metal stake seems very strong but keeping it vertical is the trick. I'll probably just place a tripod of them fixed to the horizontal bars of the umbrella part, not ideal aesthetically though
Hi all it has been some time since I've posted on these forums. We moved house some 18 months ago. It has taken 5 skips and days of shredding to peel back 20 years worth of overgrown jungle on the new plot. I have recently removed 2 large overgrown dogwoods. Leaving an exposed wall that is approx 7 foot by 18. My idea was to train a rambler. I need something that will establish quickly. The most important criteria would be quick to establish and has repeat flowering (which is rare on a true rambler). I have looked at Phyllis bride and Malvern Hills, however both are yellow tinged which is outside my pastel theme. Any suggestions would be really appreciated. Wall is South Facing, soil will be improved with home made compost but is fairly rich anyway.
We couldn't stop the wind from blowing my red standard rose over, even though it had heavy weight support in two directions. In the end we resorted to painting a three inch round fence pole black, and hammering two and a half feet into the ground, which left three and a half feet above to attach the rose to @Nollie@Tack It's not so noticeable in the winter when the rose is bare, and covered when in leaf, and planted underneath.
@Jason-3 Hi Jason, I remember you, great to see you again.
Wouldn't you like 'Mme. Alfred Carriere' on that wall? it's made for it. I had an identical wall and that's what I grew on it. A fast grower which can be trained rambler fashion very easily.. continuous flowering when established..
..but if that's no good, we'll think of something else.. some ramblers offer repeat bloom to an acceptable degree..

I must admit, that's a bit steep...
