Sadly with the exotic fruits like mangoes, avocados, kiwis, dates, lychees, oranges etc etc, we cant provide the right conditions without turning the whole house into a garden. theyre interesting to grow and have as houseplants however.
@Whiterot- WHY do it??? Because the root end of the spring onion would be thrown away! Why on earth wouldn't I plant it to then have never ending spring onions and never need to buy them again!
@Joyce Goldenlily. I knew someone who got a pineapple from growing the top. I wondered about the fruit, I germinated kiwi seeds but dumped them thinking they'd never get to fruiting stage. Ive had avocados growing in the borders from stones out of the compost heap, just wondered if they would fruit if I’d left them. When I had rabbits I would put the tops in a saucer of water to grow for them to eat.

But will they actually get fruit on them and how long does it take? I’ve grown lemon pips before and never had a lemon.

What I don’t understand regarding the spring onions, is what you’re planting? When I use spring onions the only bit I discard is a wafer-thin slice from the base of the onions which has the roots attached.
What I see in the photos and videos is the bottom 2cm or so of the spring onion which is being described as ‘waste’. It’s not waste in this house … we eat it … we eat the whole of the spring onion from the bottom to within the top centimetre or so.
