Really lovely the way it's arching over..  Mr Vine has one on his house wall which he manages very well..

Beautiful photos @Busy-Lizzie and @Marlorena that’s exactly how I was hoping mine might look, I’ve got a very big area I want it to cover but like @WAMS said I don’t want to wait a whole year to see if it’s healthy or dead!  It’s a new area I’m planting and the other plants I’ve got are meant to compliment the colour of Malvern Hills.  I think I’ll ring them tomorrow and be a bit more forceful …. which I can be when needed!!

  • I think DA may well be right, as when I first saw it I thought it looks ok. It might just take a little while to get going as something has stunted it - maybe frosting.

But check a couple of things - the part I’ve coloured red looks to have died back to just above that bud, so I’d chop it off at that point.

I think the yellow highlighted cane could be a sucker from the rootstock as it looks different to the others, it’s growing quite far away from the rest of the canes and the new growth is starting very pale green on it.

But check before cutting it off - is it coming from the same place all the other canes are or is it lower down, from the roots?

Id also move the rocks away so there’s a free circle around the rose.

@CatDouch Roses are tough plants.. a bareroot that I received after being lost in shipment for almost a month..

    a month later...

one more month later.. assuming the new growths are not suckers  :# I can count atleast 5 of them.. Hydrated for a day.. trimmed down to about 10cms or so.. 2 inches from graft union was placed below the surface.. put in a small pot as I was sure it will die and gave it mycorrhyzial fungi... No reason why yours should not do well.. DA would have responded like that because it is still winter and some cane die back is expected..

@Mr. Vine Eye do you think that yellow bit is a sucker? It does not look like new growth to me.. pretty sure CatDouch planted the union deep and it is one of the branches.. May be give it some time and TLC as you mentioned and see what happens.. worst case scenario, plant does not do well and DA will give a new potted one (hopefully)...

..thing is cooldoc, all that top growth on your rose is dead, it's springing back from just above the graft point.. they're not suckers [neither is the other one I think]... a great survivor for sure and often happens, but catdouch paid a lot of money for her MH and one would expect it to look better than it does at this stage.. especially in south Devon..

..but I can understand DA's reasoning with their 5 year guarantee, and it has to be said, most issues are due to local cultivation, - potted roses are difficult to establish even for the more experienced.. but I've seen them offer replacements on Instagram seemingly without fuss..

It could be an old sucker. I've seen roses shipped with older pruned suckers before! As if they were part of the rose.

    It's just worth checking.

I’ve just cleared away the large gravel from around the rose, tidied up the area and watered it and attach a new photo which is probably easier to see what’s what!

I’m not expert enough to know if that’s a sucker @Mr. Vine Eye  I pulled away some of the earth and I ‘think’ it’s just another branch but wondered if you’d get a clearer view from my new photo?

I think I’ll persevere for another couple of weeks and if there’s no improvement I’ll tackle DA again as all my other roses, new and old, have got new growth showing.

The reason I like to have something covering the bare earth is because the black furry legs belong to a monkey who likes to dig 🙈
