Is my new rose dead?

CatDouchCatDouch Posts: 488
Hi, about a month ago I planted 2 new roses, Malvern Hills which was bought from David Austin as a potted rose and Absolutely Fabulous from Peter Beatles, again as a potted rose.

I planted both as per instructions but I don’t think the Malvern Hills looks very healthy.  Quite quickly it grew new tiny leaves in two areas but one of the little bunch of leaves has disappeared and it the rose seems to have stalled, also the stems look quite brown in comparison with the new Absolutely Fabulous.

Is this normal for Malvern Hills or does it look dead?  All my other roses look much healthier, with more new growth so I’m wondering if something’s happened 😬. I’ve not had a rambler before so I’ve got my fingers crossed that this is normal 🤞

This is Malvern Hills

It doesn't look good. Have you contacted David Austin? Send them the photo.

  • @CatDouch you also need to clear the stones from around your roses.  Stones/pebbles/cobbles in summer will absorb and hold onto the heat and damage/potentially kill your roses.

Most of that rose is dead, yes, but there is still a bit of life at the base on the right, there is a little green shoot and green stem.. however, not worth persevering with...  under their 5 year guarantee they will send you a replacement.. I have never found them to quibble, just email the picture..

Thanks @Marlorena I’ve spoken to them and they’ve requested a photo which I’ve emailed to them so fingers crossed they replace it.  I’ve never had a rose do this to me before but it wouldn’t have crossed my mind to contact them, I would have just blamed myself!

Oh dear @Marlorena David Austin have said that they don’t think the rose is dead but just has darker stems!!

They “encourage me to persevere this season but if there is no improvement get in touch again”  Their first email asked me to do a scratch test which I did, I also did a scratch test on a healthy rose with new shoots and the Malvern Hills definitively seemed drier but despite this they are not willing to give me a replacement, so I’m not too happy with them at the moment 😒

That's sounds rather mean of them. I hope, however it happens, that you end up with a healthy rose.

Oh dear, I'm sorry they're not replacing it at this stage...  it's true that the rose is not completely dead, and the lower canes do have a purple hue to them on this rose, but enough of it is in a bad way, - and I'll be surprised if you don't lose that central shoot..there are a couple of little green shoots here and there, but I wouldn't be happy with that at this point, especially as you're in a milder part of the country..

Perhaps when warmer weather arrives it'll shoot up some more.. they can surprise us, so fingers crossed for that... bit disappointing though from DA on this occasion I would say..

Perhaps you should hope it doesn't grow, as it's a monster if left to its own devices..

..this is only half the plant,  I really couldn't cope with it..

That's a shame. They actually are quite inconsistent and just offered to replace a plant of mine that has more life left in it than that. Perhaps it depends who you get answering your email. Perhaps it's worth ringing them up? It's not great to have to wait a whole year to get started.

That's pretty stunning, @Marlorena. But might definitely overwhelm the garden pdq!
