I got a letter on the 22nd December, the last day before the long Christmas weekend, inviting me to renew my driving licence. I did it on line at 3.15pm, using my passport details for the photo and signature. My new licence has just arrived in the post a week later. I’m pretty impressed by that!
  • The DVLA has your face on record whether you renew online or not though.  And you need a passport to renew online precisely because the passport office has a digitally-held record of your face.  There is no escaping it, I'm afraid, unless you have an old paper licence and you never move house.

Or don't get to 70.  Mine arrived in a couple of days, too. Stunned and amazed when a system works.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

The NHS couldn't match mine to my driving licence recently!

I had the letter to renew mine a few days before Christmas.  Less than 48 hours after completing the form online my new driving licence arrived.

Wow, @KT53, that’s even speedier than mine!
@pansyface, not too worried about the facial recognition. My photo doesn’t look anything like me! I do remember getting laughed at once, at passport control, because my hair colour no longer matched the picture.
And of course you’ll have heard the old saying that anyone who actually looks like their passport photo is definitely too ill to travel!
  • Since the winter solstice, "our" song thrush has started singing again in the mornings as soon as it gets light, from the top of the tallest beech tree in the garden.  Spring is on the way...   :)
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

I was going to say the same. I had an old paper license up to last year.  Earlier in that year it cause great amusement in the car hire place in Ireland,  as the young lad at the desk had never seen one, he even rang head office to check if it was ok😆.
