The Goldcrest has been again today. That's 3 days on the trot. Seems to be getting something off the bare branches of a willow. Almost looked as though it was eating bird poo left by other birds. Nice to see some Siskins as well today.
Clay soil - Cheshire/Derbyshire border. I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful
Never seen goldcrests in the garden, lovely creatures!
Lots of flying about in my garden in today's frost. On my crab-apple tree Malus 'Evereste': blackbirds, thrushes, sparrows (2 kinds), tits (blue-headed ones and black-headed ones), a couple of pigeons.
And, bird of the day liking the make-shift bird-bath/drinking station and the home-made cereamics feeder: little red robin.
Brief visit by Lesser Redpoll today but he couldn't find a space as there were too many Goldfinches on both seed feeders. I wouldn't mind but they drop most of it on the floor

Sadly just found out that this juvenile Great Northern Diver, which had taken up residence for the winter on a local lake, has died. I'm assuming the lake (Redesmere) had frozen solid and he either got trapped or he just sat tight without any nutrition for days.

Lovely pix @Papi Jo. Very impressive - your home made feeder What is the white thing inside? I'm racking my brain trying to think what it is! I think my favourite recent pic from the garden is this one Sparrows a plenty here @CDouch, but they're in decline in many areas ,which is a great pity. We get tree sparrows nearby too.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

Thanks ! I'll forward your appreciation to the artist in residence (OH). That intriguing white block is a block of lard (in French saindoux) which I'd been told is a great source of fat for birdies in freezing temperatures. Actually it's totally ignored by the little feathery visitors.
Ah- I see it now @Papi Jo I'm not sure the birds would ever eat that on it's own though - usually it's melted and other grain/nuts/fruit etc added, and poured into a container to set, to make a block feeder of some kind.
I've only ever known sparrows as sparrows, but I knew others called them spuggies

@LunarSea I looked at your photo and thought, that looks a lot like a juvenile loon. I had to look it up to learn it is, indeed, the same bird. I live in what's known as 'the lakes region' and we have many loons nesting on our lakes in summer. The Loon Preservation Committee has been instrumental in getting legislation passed to ban the use of lead fishing tackle in the US, which the loons ingest and it usually is fatal. I'm sorry to hear the one in your photo has died. They are magnificent birds, and each loss is profoundly felt.
I love the robins in the UK; the robins here are distinctly different birds and not as beautiful.
I noticed yesterday that a small flock of bluebirds had arrived and was eating the food I'd thrown out for the crows. This was one yesterday:
And this little goldfinch was wearing a snowflake hat
My mother had forgotten to bring her feeders in before the storm, but luckily most of them were open enough for the birds to get their seed the next morning. We had mostly chickadees and goldfinch, a few tufted titmice and nuthatches, and the odd woodpecker on the suet here and there.
