The past few years the Blue Jays have been fewer and fewer at the feeders. It used to be they were worse than Starlings. We have at least one that has hung around.
And yesterday our resident Red Shouldered Hawk was haunting the feeders. It's part of a nesting pair that live year-round in the woods near our house. I love watching them.

I cleaned out two of the feeders yesterday and set them to dry overnight in the greenhouse . The mealworm feeder is a clear dome over a tray you can adjust so only the small birds can get in. The other small seed feeder, had some mouldy seed stuck at the bottom all good now though it's a bit fiddly to take apart and clean . I have put up a revised fat feeder, and seen the woodpecker on it already, just got to hope it defeats the pesky parakeets. This is the arrangement now. From the left the tall feeder has spung loaded ports, to deter anything bigger than a starling, the next is caged the dome over the new fat feeder keeps the squirrels off, the mealworm dish is lower far right.
Yes I forgot to say, there's one more persistent one but even that seems to be foxed for now. Even better, it was on the fat cage but couldn't get anything when the larger of our regular woodpeckers came and actually chased it away Normally if anything else come the peckers fly off but not this time 🙂
@Allotment Boy I'll need to see a better photo of that face made of roots or whatever it is in the background - that is fantastic!
And just to keep it bird related, our hawk was back the next day, blending in fantastically with the mulberry tree branches. I didn't want to spook him, so this was taken through the window, so it's a bit hazy.
