@WonkyWomble, the situation in the UK under the Conservatives is very unjust, the rich are getting richer and the poor are poorer. I notice the difference when I come over from France where the difference is less noticeable. I can understand your frustration and anger, but please don't be cross with @Lizzie27. Or have I misunderstood?
One of the big problems in the UK is the price of housing. It makes it so difficult for the young now to earn enough. Yet there are gorgeous houses dotted around the country side that must cost a fortune and people have managed to buy them. Why does a stock broker earn so much and a nurse so little? It doesn't seem right.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Allotmentboy, who has tied you to a desk!!! That's abuse. 5 tog duvet, nah, still (and always!) using the summer one 😂. Trouble with a south facing conservatory,it's evil in summer. I'm hot stuff. After 10 years (this time) of hot flushes, I got put onto amlodepine for high BP, guess what the side effect is!!!
Yes, the room gets hot in the summer, but being a garden room rather than a true conservatory, we have power points for a portable air conditioner, when required. Plus, because it's attached to the back of the house, we open the double doors into the dining room, and the coolness of the rest of the house helps to remove the heat. Then in winter, when sunny, we allow the heat coming in to warm the rest of the house. The real downside is wanting to keep plants on the windowsill. The excessive heat burns them.
We recently had the chimney swept in case we have a power cut and need to get a wood fire going. The sweep commented that our chimney balloon was good for keeping the warmth in the room so that's another good idea. From memory they cost about £15. I've just got to remember to remove it before we light a fire!
Also, apparently you can stick film (cling film?) to single glazed windows on the inside which will help to insulate them. I've not tried this, does it work?
@Lizzie27, I've just got stuck in football traffic trying to get home from an unsuccessful trip around all hardware stores trying to buy clear plastic sheeting film.... Sold out everywhere so I think a few people have had that brain wave. But I suppose on the plus side that would suggest it works... As long as you can get hold of any! 👍😀
My lovely Hubby has made homemade double glazing with some rigid clear plastic and wood battens. It makes a real difference! Now we just need to do all the other windows!!!
great job that man Just be aware that they will reduce the draughts (Good Thing) and that may make damp on the surfaces more likely (less air movement) so be alert to places where you see a sheen on the walls. Most likely time is first thing in the morning so do a wipe 'round if you need to

We found if we leave a dish of cat litter behind the it absorbs the majority of moisture but yes it gets a regular wipe around. It's amazing how much heat it traps! 👍😊 He's quite a resourceful chap for a towny! 😉
He's thinking of taking orders! I see a sideline business on the horizon 🤔😉 Thank you for your encouragement folks... I'm hoping it will have a motivational effect and the rest of the windows will get done! 👍
@AuntyRach, you've inspired me to get wool blankets from charity shops and make door curtains!!
My two rescue cats have found that even though they don't like each other they are willing to share the sheepskin rug and highland wool blanket! 🤣
