I'm in France and years ago I did a back to nursing course in a French hospital. Sometimes I helped with the colonoscopies, usually when the patients were English so that I could translate. The patients were given a short acting anaesthetic which lasted 10 to 15 minutes so they were asleep for the worst of it. I have been told by English friends that they didn't have an anaesthetic in England. Is that true? Sounds very unpleasant.
Both times I’ve been offered and gladly accepted sedation, via a cannula in my hand. My understanding, from speaking to friends and family members, is that this is standard practice … I was conscious enough to follow what was going on without being stressed or experiencing real pain. Perfectly fine. 😊

Hi @Albe. Here in Luxembourg they offer screening every two years after the age of 50. They send you a container where (well, you know what) and if the sample is contaminated with blood they ask you to have one straight away (still not obliged though). Otherwise your doctor can prescribe one at any time. If there is a history of illness in your family I would definitely do it.
So, like other posts the worst thing was the effing 3 litres of stuff that I had to drink. I did the procedure without anesthetic and was fine. I also had gastroscopies which I feel they are much, much worse and next time I am definitely taking a tranquillizer. Good luck!
I had one a few years ago when I was having discomfort down below. Like @AnniD I had a lovely lady holding my hand, and whispering sweet nothings in my ear . The doctor told me to let him know when it got uncomfortable, and I did when he went in a bit far, but all was good. I saw my insides on-screen for the first time.
Unfortunately the second part of the investigation, on another day, was a camera-probe (look away now!) threaded up through my willy. Was out cold for this one but it was like peeing glass shards for weeks afterwards .
Nothing serious was discovered thankfully. There are times though when you just have to bite the bullet or be forever expecting the worst.

Sadly I didn't get to see my insides, because the sedation sent me straight to sleep and I didn't wake up until it was all over.
