I didn't expect to learn a new word from a detective novel (Strong Poison, a Lord Peter Wimsey novel by Dorothy L.Sayers), but there you are... I thought it was yet another misprint, but thought I should look it up just in case.

BISTRED.  Adjective.  Of a brown colour like the pigment called bistre.

Interesting word but I think brownish will do me for now.
Have you noticed that when you learn a new word, it keeps popping up? Either you never noticed it before or people are using it more..
I fully expect bistred to turn up again very soon @Liriodendron
