I can remember rows of red Salvia splendens and Senecio cineraria in a local park. It also had rows of Dahlias, birds in big cages and a bandstand. Very Victorian and with it's own charm. Today you are more likely to see Salvia Hot Lips and Senecio Angels Wings planted informally when visiting a garden.
How plants are used to create atmosphere is what I love the most. I used to buy plants as an experiment or because I liked them. Now I have a different approach what will they add? Perhaps link other plants I already have by colour or leaf, create drama or atmosphere, something green to calm or add to the shape of the garden in the winter months. This approach has saved me a fortune along with repeating some of the plants I already have.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
We have had an interesting discussion on colour matching. But I feel the remit was too limiting. Do we need a new wider discussion about Colour in the Garden or even Plant Pairing/groupings?
Start one and I'll join. Or point me to one already extanct.
