Could it be Valeriana phu Aurea?
Yes! It looks very like it to me and I think the flower was white. How clever of you

  • I’m pretty sure Woodgreen has found the answer to this. It looks so like it. I’m very grateful because I hate having a plant in my garden that I don’t recognise.

    "Valeriana phu 'Aurea'

A small growing semi-evergreen perennial with a slow, creeping habit, the plant has striking golden foliage and produces small flower spikes in spring with an open white flower."

OK so foliage is golden all the time.
I assumed colour was due to autumn! Duh!

I'm not entirely sure -- there seems to be some green leaves in your  photos @LynfromSea and I wonder if your plant is too tall for valerian phu Aurea. I thought @Silver surfer had got it with Valeriana officinalis, and that maybe the yellowing was just autumnal.
You said that it's leaves are acid yellow now, but have they been acid yellow all through the growing season or have they turned from green?
It was your mention of 'acid yellow' that made me think of v.phu Aurea, but I've not seen that plant, only read of it.
    How tall is it?

Edited to add: RHS say phu Aurea leaves turn from yellow in spring to greenish yellow in summer, Beth Chatto site says green in summer!
    1 m high.

No it’s not a Valerian. The leaves are yellow and smaller.

    LynfromSea   Can I just check.
You say leaves are yellow and smaller.
    Are they yellow in summer?

(My Valerian officianalis  pics were taken in June.)
    No I don’t think so
