Has anyone grown cl. Masquerade? The David Austin site says it's repeat flowering but also "Flowers freely, but only in the summer." This page ( http://www.mooseyscountrygarden.com/rose-garden/masquerade-climbing-rose.html ) says it "continues to repeat spasmodically throughout the summer." How many weeks or months would it actually bloom for in England, I wonder. I like it and its changing colours, though it doesn't look as dainty as Mutabilis.
No scent, prickly and blackspot prone, but when it flowers, it is glorious. Regarding the frequency of flowering, I think the second description is more apt. And the flowers stay long on the plant, more than a week.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
@Eustace. I remember that post (Bordure Abricot there) but not that particular rose... "glorious" is the right word.😍 Sounds as if it's worth growing. Thank you!
@Marlorena I've got Chianti in my garden, this will be it's third summer. It's still in a pot though, so it really needs to go in the ground now. First year the amount of blooms it produced were amazing, last year, for some reason nowhere near as good. I've also got another Austin original Constance Spry which is coming on leaps and bounds and approaching it's second year in the ground, so I'm hoping for a reasonable bloom show this summer.
@peteS I do love the colour on your rose... I hope you manage to get it in the ground before too long..
@Tack Nice result, that was good of them.. I'm glad you are pleased with your plants... I've had that Salvia before in another garden, as I recall it prefers damp ground..
Well, thanks for earlier comments, I’m sure Gertie will appreciate my efforts. I’ve got more rose moving to do and really need to get on with it but took a break today. I’m going to move Golden Celebration to give it more space and I suspect that might be a whopper rootball too. Smudge has offered to supervise again 🐶
I see you are still being acquisitive WAMS, not running out of space yet?!
I’m contemplating an online perennial order, those border gaps aren’t going anywhere. So many were mislabelled last year and most of them didn’t survive the hideous early heatwave anyway. Dare I risk it again this year? 🤔
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@WAMS I had climbing Masquerade many years ago. It did not repeat flower, but as Eustace mentioned the individual blooms last a long time so the flowering period is also long and it does look spectacular. IMO not so intrinsically beautiful as Mutabilis though.
Thanks @Jemula. Keeping this in mind for next year/late summer as I will have a white wall to work with, and red-toned climbers on a white wall.. 🔥 🔥 🔥
Cottage Memories order... these were about £9 each, Blackberry Nip and Giardina, next day delivery via APC for under £5. I don't know how they make any money but these are great.
