@Marlorena thanks; I will give the obelisk a go for sure. What sort of rose is generally suitable for a small obelisk? Would the GO’s I put in the ground recently work?
Your PW does indeed look very special. Very attractive blooms. Have you ever grown Country Parson?
Yeh you’re right it does look more like Champagne moment. Definitely had a GT tag on it. Is that a rare mistake for DA to send the wrong one?
@Alfie_ ..just to be clear.. 'Comte de Champagne' is what I think it is, not 'Champagne Moment' which is a different rose.. edit.. and yes they do make mistakes, they all do.. over the last 10 years I've had 3 mistakes from them. It can work out quite costly for them to replace, especially if they were potted varieties..
..as for GO on an obelisk, I wouldn't have thought of that but it's worth a try even if you only tie back a few canes, an obelisk creates an attractive garden aesthetic in its own right.. the rose doesn't need to swamp it, and at 4 feet tall it might suit..
..yes I've had The Country Parson.. I think I wrote earlier about it.. rather too prickly for me in the long term but it's a very lovely rose with a lemon scent, constantly producing blooms.. 'Silas Marner' is another I like for its terrific Spring coloured foliage, quite superb, but the rose is another with an annoying floppy habit with canes that need propping up, or else the blooms are on the floor.. probably better in time, I'm sure..
I'm still very new to roses. I bought quite a few bare root roses last November, some have exceeded expectation and some i know are sleeping. I have just planted more this November.
I've chanced 3 to grow up obelisks and i'm wondering about my choices now. I've just planted Summer Song x2 and a Bring Me Sunshine, inside the 3 obelisks. I wasn't sure at the time of planting, inside or in front of, so i've left enough room for me to still be able to move the obelisk, rather than the rose, if you think i should do?
I'm also wondering if i've made the right choice regarding the roses for growing up them?
I've just seen Ronnie O'Sullivan at the garden center. I think he was eyeing up a plant.
@Alfie_ Earlier this year I’ve ordered bare root Elizabeth from DA. When it began to bloom in the summer it turned out to be something else. It looks very similar to your “GT”. I asked DA customer support to identify what rose they’ve sent me instead of Elizabeth but they didn’t respond (although they did send me potted Elizabeth eventually).
Here’s one photo of my not-Elizabeth from June this summer
I have Bring Me Sunshine on an obelisk, I found it put out a 5 foot cane this summer so I gave it some support. Trial and error how it works out, but the cane is bendy so I've wrapped it around a bit.. we shall have to compare notes. Summer Song I've also had on a structure as it's yet another floppy type, so that will benefit. As for the planting, I've done it both ways, I much prefer to plant outside the obelisk for various reasons, I just think it looks better and if you want to change the rose because you don't like it, then it's easier if it's outside rather than within. For the centre I actually plant hardy Geraniums because they have a tendency to climb grown this way.. and I think it looks nice.. However, it's up to you, and you can keep it the way you've done it, but for me I would only put a rose inside an obelisk now if it was potted, where you have no choice.. If you want to see any of my obelisk trained roses just let me know..
Thank you. At least i can rest over the choice of roses now. I did go and take a look at the space i left to reposition the obelisks after my last post and realised i should of left more. If i move the rose forward i'd have to move two more forward also. So i'm going to sleep on it.
Yes, would love to see your obelisk trained roses, please!

@Oliya yes that does indeed look similar to my ‘GT’. Weird they haven’t at least tried to ID it.
@Marlorena yes sorry I meant compte de champagne. I have champagne moment and it’s definitely not that . I think you’re right with C de C. They do indeed look similar.
Yes the reason I thought about about an obelisk for GO is some had said it’s a bit spindly but still grows tall. Thanks - I might give it a try then.
Hi all, back again after yet another trip to the UK to deal with elderly parent crisis, this time ma broke her hip! She is recovering well and should be returning to a physically adapted house soon. I have been enjoying all your posts but not really had the mental energy to engage. Found the energy to order more roses though!!
As Marlorena predicted, I succumbed to the lure of Marie Nabonnand and added Crépuscle and Indigo. The latter was to make up my minimum of three for an order, since the one I wanted, Mrs. B.R. Cant, was OOS. I was also tempted by the original tea Mlle. Sombreuil (not the large flowered climber sold under that name) but have enough new white roses on order so resisted.
I think I have also ordered Crown Princess Margareta, The Dark Lady and another The Prince from an obscure German nursery! Falstaff was nowhere to be found. I am sceptical since many eu nurseries claim to have these older Austins but then you get an email saying they don’t have them after all. Also there didn’t appear to be a payment option, but could be they invoice later like TCL.
There was heavy hail and frost in my absence and it’s certainly gone very cold and wintry here. Still plenty of buds around but the dying of the light is definitely upon us..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
