@Marlorena and @Nollie thank you so much! This is really interesting and thank you for the links, I will investigate. I might watch the video on 1.5x speed!
I'm growing Souvenir du Docteur Jamain on the north facing side of the house (so not too much sun, hopefully the flowers will be OK) on an obelisk. Do I need to train the canes horizontally (or at least diagonally up) around the obelisk?
@BlueBirder Yes diagonally if you can, twirling it around.. allow a cane or two to grow straight up as well, depends what you have to work with.. I hope you have a sufficiently sturdy obelisk..
..some Clematis arrived today from Taylor's.. all planted now.. ..some shrubs from Burncoose.. the red stem one that looks like a Cornus is a Ceanothus, at least that's what's on the label... the other a Myrtle..
I think we all get a kick out of receiving something like this, whatever it is..
For Dahlia lovers, I got my new summer bulb catalogue today from Anglia Bulb co. they're very good, I've bought from them before... their Dahlia selection is excellent.. better than Gracy I think.. Lilies too.. I feel an order coming on..
Thanks for the tip, Marlorena. I will have a look at them!
Falstaff, planted in October, looks pretty unhappy.
I contacted DA and they straightaway said they will send out a replacement next year as it is sold out (typical DA service- excellent). I don't know what to do with this one here... persevere? Pot up and put in a cold frame? Ditch and plant something else there?

..that's workable I think... I would prune where I've put the white lines.. those dead bits need to come off..
A good compost mulch after feeding next month, works wonders..
