I was pleased to nab "the last one"  - which was foolish as it was a runt - bad root system and few canes. I should have waited.

Yes. A good supplier should have just said "no" to me, rather than sending out rubbish.

I try not to jump these days.

Surely the answer is to buy as many roses and as widely as possible so you have many good experiences to outweigh the middling ones

I bought two Chandos Beauty bare roots in March from PB which are doing fabulously in huge pots.  They were half price and still less than a DA rose for the two of them. My DA Clare Austin (another bare root bought around the same time) is doing ok - no flowers yet and some leaf issues but it’s in the ground and it is a different type of rose. I guess I’m saying it’s hard to compare between companies unless you buy the exact same item at the same time. I wouldn’t hesitate buying from PB though. 🌹

@WhereAreMySecateurs They both look very healthy.  That pink is lovely isn't it.

@Busy-Lizzie Yes, I was reading about it having a climbing habit...  I might pop a small trellis or canes next to it in year 1 to see what happens, but will put it where this could be okay.  Is the colour nice for you?

@bédé So far so good with mine.  I'm in the first years in this house so trying to create something for the long term as the garden was previously used for growing children so wasn't their priority.  I've been lucky but for a couple of roses that I did get from DA - might be position/soil in that spot but others are so lovely this year.  I always add a lot of new compost etc and as my garden isn't enormous, thankfully watering isn't too much of a problem for me.

@bcpathome Take a look on Youtube & DA at The Larks Ascending - there's one video in particular I loved, I think you'd know which it is if you watch it.  It's a wonderful apricot and although PBeales didn't have it I'm still pondering but depending on your garden you just might like it too.  Enjoy your gift card

You asked about their potted roses, size of pot etc.  I was there in April this year, and fortuitously took a picture of 'Uetersen' on their benches...

I noticed you have bought both Bone Meal and Root Boost... you should be advised of the latest research on this, which has found that Root Boost products are made inactive by the application of high phosphorus Bone Meal at the same time.  It won't harm your rose, it's just you've paid for a product - Root Boost - only to destroy it by applying bone meal.. so it's a case of one or the other, but not both together...  however, it's up to you..
That's great info and thank you so much - I intended to put bone meal to the top and the root boost inside along with a handful of slow release or rose feed - but who knows, on the day I could chuck anything in, so I really appreciate that help.

Thank you also for the picture.  They looked lovely then didn't they.  Be interesting to see how they arrive after reading of some getting a poor item, but fingers crossed they'll be fine.

    Thank you very much 😊
  • I have been buying roses from Peter Beales for over forty years and have always received very good quality plants whch have done well...but then I have bought bare roots rather tahn container plants, which I think are more difficult to establish.  I also rate David Austin roses.

@parrotfeather* Thats good to know. Roses are a flower I always loved but found quite boring until this year when a good show from those I planted 2-3 years ago converted me. I got those from David Austin.

Got a phone call from PBeales couple days ago telling me the Uetersen (Container Rose) in my order has had to be cut back because it had got some disease during the recent weather, so all the leaves etc are off it.  They assure me it will still be fine this year and flower but gave me the choice to change.  I decided to continue as I did feel reassured and it is a lovely rose.  Also, they are being despatched soon so the 10-14 working days for delivery looks more like 5-7 days I think.

It might turn up looking quite scary, lol.

Perhaps they shouldn't send out diseased roses, but you could look at it thus: at least they aren't drenching their plants in Bugclear, Fungusclear or commercial equivalent.

(However, they do happily flog that horrible stuff through their website.🤷🏻‍♀️

  • I would normally be cutting back even container roses a bit when planting so I wouldn't worry.  I am sure that this nursery would not be sending out anything which would not grow well.
