Do Peter Beales Roses

Hi rose lovers...

I've had some wonderful success this year with the few roses I have so I've decided to order some container from Peter Beales because they seemed like a great idea price-wise etc too.

Was going to buy via David Austin who are really quick but the difference in price for 5 more roses was sufficient to wait... are they as good?  Do they come in good rose plant pots etc?

Got 2 climbers:  Iceberg & Uetersen (thinking for for either side of quite a large magnolia that is very uninteresting except for spring)
And 3 shrub roses:  St Ethelburga, Bonica & Westerland

Do you have experience of any of these in UK - Situ: front garden not sunny all day but ok all afternoon.

The roses + bonemeal and Root Boost all for under £100 - pretty good pricing at the moment with their discount code isn't it....  DAustin would have almost cost double that.

Also, current delivery says 10-14 working - does it usually take that long do you know?

Thank you

Peter Beales Classic Roses are a long established company with a very good reputation. They are also local to me and I've visited several times.

The staff are generally helpful, knowledgeable and straightforward to deal with, so I'd definitely give them a ring and just ask them.

Does it matter if they take 14 days to arrive? Or are you trying to time delivery round a holiday or something? If so, they are the sort of company to try and organise an earlier or later delivery to suit you.

My own thoughts are that it wouldn't normally take 14 working days but I guess they are leaving themselves that flexibility in case of staff sickness, courier delays, staff holidays etc

If they have the staff in and the roses you want are already potted up I would think they'd send them out asap. The only way to know though is to ask.

They are taking two weeks at the moment, yes.

I'd say Trevor White, Styles and David Austin have always delivered fantastic quality roses and very promptly. Styles is next day, TW within 3 days, DA within 4. Also had very good experiences with Eastcroft and Rumwoods, who also delivered within 2 days.

Hi @Topbird ... Yes... It doesn't matter that much but my hubby goes away in 4 days for almost a week and it would have been great to get during that time, but not essential.  Yes, I imagine container rose sales are busy at the moment.  I'll leave them to send in their own time.

You are so lucky to live nearby.  I'm sure I'll be happy when they do arrive - thank you x

@WhereAreMySecateurs - Just looked at Trevor White (never heard of them or Styles before) and they look really good.  My previous roses bought 2017 & 18 from DAustin are looking great (except for a couple that I'll probably need to ask about on here some time) but over all really nice.  The Larks Ascending rose was what I originally started looking for as I fell in love with it and might still get that, but thanks for the heads up on the other sites... x

My experience with Peter Beales is good.  But I have bad experience with containerised plants generally and roses in particular..  On both clay soil and again on sandy soil. I have found that roots remain within their pot orbit and are reluctant to embrace new soil.  Whist you keep them well watered there is no problem, but as soon as you ease up they suffer, often terminally.
Peat-free comp0st is one of the problems.  Once dehydrated, it is almost impossible to rehydrate.
Bare-rooted planting in the off-season allows the roots inyimate contact with the native soil.

On my current poor sandy soil in shade, I find that gallica roses on their own roots, or planted deeply, will sucker about freely and pop up evrywhere,  (Not to everybody's taste.). Albas are similarly successful but with less suckering.
location: Surrey Hills, England, ex-woodland acidic sand.

OH's cottage in Norfolk is only about 20 mins from Peter Beales so I've been there often. The potted roses are pretty good and the  garden there is beautiful.

I bought Westerland from them as a shrub but it really wants to be a climber! I like it in their garden but later saw that they prune it quite severely.

I'd say TW edges it over the others.

Trevor White or Styles... I couldn't pick a winner, but it's one of them.

I've used trevor white and Peter beales, both are excellent companies. Never had an issue with roses from either. I would buy from either again, and the only reason I would choose one over the other is what they had in stock.

This thread has been very useful to read through .Always used P Beals for roses very successfully but have been given a David Austin gift card as a birthday gift.I have never bought DA roses so am glad to hear that they are recommended. Now all I have to do is work out how to use the gift card on line ………….
