"Night soil" was a thing right up until the widespread introduction of flush toilets and sewer systems.

and toilet paper, which in quantity, causes problems (as has happened on trains).

Mens pee is best for not making the soil/compost acidic,  womens will.
I’ve always wanted one of those earth toilets in the garden,  think of the water saving.
I suppose those marathon cyclists must pee whilst cycling or do they have pit/pee stops along the way.

I first thought the title of this discussion was about "peeing whilst cycling". Why not? :*

Compost toilets are easy enough to install, even in cities. Peeing in the garden and in compost piles  is helpful. I've not used it in my sealed compost bins as they are quite soggy anyway, but it would be interesting to see what happens.

I know, but I would feel more at ease if it had walls and roof,  and maybe a door. 🫣

Fifty five years on I can still hear in my head the words of Ron Hesketh, my geography teacher. “Never eat lettuces in Belgium, boys. They use night soil for fertiliser.”

The best composting toilet i've used is at Corrour Bothy in the Cairngorms. It is adjacent to one end of the bothy, but is up around a 10ft scramble over round boulders due to the bothy being on a slope. In winter, you often need crampons to reach it if it is iced up.
It must have the best view from any toilet i have ever used, if you leave the door open.  :D

My allotment neighbour pee's around his sweetcorn because he says it keeps the rats away.
