Another problem with them is that they can't be repaired if they do leak. With a standard hose you can cut out the leaky bit and fit a straight connector.
@RoddersUK. @KT53 Many thanks for your input. Weighing up the pros and cons it is definitely off my online shopping list. I am really grateful for all the replies as I was very tempted and have now saved the money and any misfortunes I would have had. @februarysgirl You must be one of the lucky ones so I do hope it continues that way for you.
@fidgetbones. That's worth knowing should I change my mind thanks but I do hate having to send things back. Hope your Mum is happy with hers now and doesn't have any further problems.
We love ours. We have a steeply tiered garden, with lots of angles, and a standard hose was too cumbersome and kept catching on fragile plants.
Our first one lasted one year, before springing a leak. We simply cut off the end, with the hole, and reattached to a connector, so we can still use it.
I wouldn't see them as something that lasts years, and we take very good care of them, but if you find standard hoses too heavy and too hard (and don't pay too much for the expandable ones), then we think they are worth it.
@KeenOnGreen. I am now verging on the "shall I shan't I" again! I must agree that my present one can damage plants if I'm not careful so the expandable one does have something in it's favour. I wouldn't be thinking of it lasting years but a year or two at the price would be reasonable. Thanks for that.
I seem to buy one every year due to them developing holes. I did buy a normal hose one year but it was so cumbersome I ended up buying a flexible one again. I didn't realise that the flexible hoses developed holes so easily, I assumed it was the cat biting through it
@KeenOnGreen I take it you actually go into the store rather than buy online? We don't have the big supermarket chains over here unfortunately. There is B&Q so may be worth a look in there next time I go.
