The etiquette of pants?

Quite a lot of girls seemed to be instructed to play in knickers and nothing else below. Boys too were punished at schol by having to do PE in their pants. It seems extraordinary now.

At the primary school I attended for my last year girls had to do games (inside and out) in vest and knickers … vest and shorts for boys.
I was a growing lass … Ma kicked up a fuss … the rules were changed to shirts and Aertex shirts for all 👍

You didn't see thighs in our school unless we were in the gym.  Skirts not allowed more than 3 inch off the floor when kneeling.  Rigorously checked with a ruler.  Culottes  came down to the knees.

Huh … ours had to touch the floor when kneeling. No chance of rolling skirts over at the top either cos we wore gym slips 🙄

These are knickers that are in the colour "French Navy" - a dark blue. They used to be a standard part of school uniform, esp to play sports.

"French knickers" seem to mean lingerie that's lacy or silky.

Thanks for the clear explanation, @Fire. So I guess those would be French Navy blue French Knickers? ;)

@Papajo.  That was definitely what Karen thought she’d be wearing for school  at 11 years old.

Yes indeed, I would say these are French navy French knickers.

we had a teacher at school who measured from the desk to the hemline ( girls had to stand on a desk to be measured.
If they wore heels, the skirts had to be longer to get the regulation level.
Patent shoes where banned as " boys look at the reflection "

HUbby had a PE teacher who insisted boys stripped totally naked before donning PE kit.
He'd even come into the changing rooms to make sure. No pants underneath shorts. If they were spotted wearing shorts, he'd take said boy back to the changing room and watch to make sure he removed his pants before putting his PE shorts back on.
    Imagine that nowadays?

I'm a bit late to the party on this thread .... but loving.

I do remember the navy knickers with the pockets for a handkerchief.
Absolutely yards of material in them.

We were expected to do all our field athletics and running in just the knickers and an airtex top ... and this was at the grammar school .... so aged 11 - 16!

At the same school we were not allowed to wear buckles on our shoes in case it reflected our underwear ... but there were no boys or male teachers to see it anyway.

The sex education was minimal to say the least.
We were told that if we were at a party without enough seats for everyone, we could only sit on a boy's lap if we had a telephone directory to sit on   :|

Yes, I hear about this kind of rule quite often, from back in the day. And teachers who insisted that every boy had to be watched in the shower - no curtains allowed.
