    It looks exactly the same as my sambucus sutherland gold does at the moment. I think the new growth takes a season or two to get woody.

    Time will tell.....
    Sambucus nigra Golden Towers will have black berries.

    While Sambusus racemose Sutherland Gold berries will be red berries

    any Sambucus nigra cultivar will stink if you rub the leaves or stems, that's a good diagnostic tool for that species, don't know if it works for other species

    Do you know if the leaves smell. Elder leaves have a very distinct smell.
    I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.

    Yes it's a bit difficult just to pop round!
