    @Valleysgirl I too think that your clematis is not early sensation. Mine has a noticeably green centre. I'll take a zoomed in picture of the flower tomorrow and post it, so that you can do a comparison.  :)

    We are early birds Eustace !just been up to open the Greenhouse door it's blue sky and sunny here in Wales, Car boot tomorrow up the Forest of Dean so getting some plants ready to take . Another pic done and yes I've got 'Joe', just caught my eye yesterday wandering our local Garden Centre Secret Garden , same filigree leaves , thanks Everyone .

    I was beginning to doubt myself, but we can clearly see the difference in the sexes there.   Early Sensation has the pistils [female] and Joe has the filaments and anthers [stamens] which contain the pollen = male.. 
    These types of clematis are dioecious, so there are male and female cultivars.

    Botany can be boring, and it's not my thing at all, but it does help distinguish otherwise similar flowers, although in these two we can also see the sepals are different.

    I'm glad that's resolved.. I had 'Joe' when it first came out years ago, I found it a weak growing plant, never got very tall as it's a little tender..

    Fascinating about male and female bits on flowers. I am going to have to pay closer attention.
