@Nollie, I would be inclined to go for 20 cm gaps between the string. I believe clematis grow quicker if they have something to cling onto.

I could well be wrong through!

I would use fine garden wire rather than string @Nollie as it will last longer.   Agree with @Lizzie27 about the 20cm distance between spirals but 15cm would be fine.   Not more than 20cm so you get a good dense coverage.

@Nollie, you can get willow to soak for such a project, if that kind of thing floats your teabag. I have some willow soaking currently and hope to get to creating soon.

Many thanks @Lizzie27, @Obelixx and @Fire, so narrower gaps it is. It’s a group 3 so long life not an issue at least for this year, but I will look at something more permanent for next year.

Hello fellow gardners this afternoon had to go and get 3 bags of Horticulture Grit from our local 'Secret Garden' family run nursery, while I was there wandering around to see what Made me smile I spied a clematis in quite a large pot called 'Early Sensation ' snap just like mine . I enquired for the name a few days ago. Can anyone have a re-think I'm really curious now, is Marlorena on here tonight . Oh and I only bought 1 treat 'Hosta Mouse Ears ' only because some little slimed thing has nibbled my new growth of 2022 already, typical !

Snap that's it and on the tag it said it only grows 1.5 m in 10 years ! So that explains we planted it when we moved here and my OH made an arch for the front garden and it's about 1m as of today. Very pretty ! Enjoy.

..I'm not sure, I still think you've got 'Joe' but I'm not claiming any expertise on this, so  check out the centre of the flower and compare with Eustace's..
'Joe' is a male plant [staminate], 'Early Sensation' is a female flower [pistillate].

'Joe' is described as having star shaped stamens with yellow anthers at the tips.

    They are very similar..
