Im planning a small (3.5x1.5m) bed around Gertrude Jekyll. I plan to under plant with a couple of Gernaium Rozanne adding some Salvia, and maybe Foxgloves later.Â
@ciaranmcgrenera Probably best to not directly under plant the roses and give a wide berth to other plants anywhere near. Rozanne has a deep and wide root system. It has been noted on the forum that roses don't play well with others. They are too hungry and thirsty and don't like the competition. This has led to my reorganising most of my garden.
Nobody ever gets it right first time, so initially I would say it's not too important about distances, you can always move things in another year, because that's what we all do. Rozanne benefits from being moved anyway, because doing so we damage the tap root, which returns the plant to a more compact form, until it regrows.. In the longer term, I would be cautious about planting it within 3 feet of anything, but sometimes it's nice to see it climb, which like lots of Geraniums is capable of doing, to 4 or 5 feet even..
More important for me, would be choosing plants to go with the rose. Gertrude Jekyll operated in my garden with 2 distinct flushes of blooms, mid May - mid June, then an irritating 6 week gap, then August-September.  It's pairing plants that go with those flushes of blooms but there are lots to choose from. Rozanne provides the continuation of display to join it all together, but for the early part I'd want things like Foxgloves, Aquilegias and Hesperis,.. for the later part things like Phlox, Penstemons even Fuchsias .. these will overlap to cover that 6 week gap, which I found annoying to say the least, but Gertrude Jekyll in August was the best thing in my garden and I had nothing to compete with it during that month...

Thank you Marlorena- that’s food for thought actually. I was focused on what would look good alongside the blooms.
@Marlorena Hi Marlorena...could you tell me if Graham Thomas flowers on new growth or old. I've just discovered a lot of BS on the stems which I've cut out and it's been left looking a bit bereft. Cheers.

..this is cheating a bit as it's in the greenhouse..
'St. Nicholas'.. a refined, old world scent to it.. not strong, just nice..

Both.. so it doesn't matter when you prune it.  Hope it recovers for you.
