I'm pondering on whether or not I could plant possibly a Gislaine de Felingord in this spot which faces East and then train it through the trellis/wall and along the 3 hacked down cherry three stumps. Soil is clay and on a slope. Advice much appreciated. I'd remove the metal chair to plant it there. However there is a narrow walkway behind the wall in my neighbour's property. Might this become a problem?
'lo again all, Having spent a month away during the scorching conditions here I feared the worst. Following a through deadheading and a couple of weeks of judicious watering things don't look so bad now. LEH Roald Dahl GdeF VB Claire Marshall Isn't it remarkable how resilient roses are?
Someone was asking about Falstaff repeating, @WhereAreMySecateurs I think. Last week I would have said it doesn't, but... 28/07 and yesterday Mine is in it's 2nd year, I found it to have a very awkward leggy growth last year and droopy canes unable to hold up the large flower heads. I have supported it this year and it is better. Hopefully it will continue to improve. Stunning colour and beautiful strong fragrance
Wow, @owd potter you have some beautiful roses. Falstaff is now a must-have for me.
I have a south-south-east facing garden and not many shady spots, but Buff Beauty is in one such and growing well, @dabolem.
@Lizzie27 I would be worried about GdF hanging over into the neighbour's path and being awkward. But then all that lovely trellis does seem to be crying out for a climbing rose. At least GdF is not thorny. Perhaps ask for your neighbour🤷♀️
Westerland looks gorgeous there, kinda like Augusta Luise almost, @Eustace
@WhereAreMySecateurs, yes, that is a concern to me. At the moment the NDN's secondary access is not used as an old lady lives there but it's likely that new neighbours might in the future. Their property is on a higher level to ours, so their path is only about a foot or two below the top of our wall. I think GdF might work if I tie it in regularly, it's a bonus that it doesn't have many thorns, if any. I really want to improve that aspect as the breeze block wall is hideous!
Believe it or not, the remaining 3 cherry tree stumps are one of 12 originally there, with only 1ft between them!
