Roald Dhal is doing so well this year - it has a naturally neat and bushy growth habit. This, together with Desdemona are my two favourites for growing in pots.Â
Another shot of Munstead wood - transplanting it to the plot really was the best decision I’ve made for MW.. it has absolutely thrived this year.. so are all the other ones that I moved to the ground.Â
All have been virtually disease free - no BS, powdery mildew and not even aphids! There were some aphids at the beginning of the season but the local blue tits promptly feasted on them.Â
Stunning balcony view above @celcius_kkw, the sky is almost the same colour as the rose
Glad some of you have had some rain and/or respite from the heat. There were yellow warnings of storms here but I cynically thought they would fizzle out into nothing and they did. Tiny rain shower I think but was miles away at work at the time.
Just dribs and drabs of roses at the moment and I wonder if it is because of the soil drying out. I am collecting waste household water for the plants but rationing only for pots, new roses and later flowering perennials. Here's a smattering of cheerfulness:
My tiny potted Roald Dahl with friends Stephanie d'Ursel behind (I know I show that rose all the time ) and another reliable Lens, Chateau de Munsbach to right hand side. Draga, sold as Hallie at Trevor White, looking quite good even if only flowering at base. I've decided to keep this potted and in this location but move to a nice pot.
HT President Armand Zinch and Lady Emma Hamilton. I think the latter leaned over, it is getting bigger than I thought. These are all fading now, only lasted a few days although it is tediously windy again. A partial flowering from the sweet Blush Noisette, likely due to my inconsistent and clumsy deadheading. If only I had a fancy long-handled tool Last one is a first one, a special little Port Sunlight, very nicely scented, a little floppy at present, hence the hand.
Your Rohald Dahl and MW are gorgeous @celcius_kkw I doubt I could grow MW looking like that.
@Victoria Sponge your garden is stunning! I stopped deadheading here because of the heat wave, but I think I can restart now and hope for some new flush.
@Nollie would you say Palais Biron/Purple Lodge is a very neat shrub? Does it get empty on the under side?
i need a purple rose, no matter the height but no more than 1 m large, but I need it shade tolerant an most of all it must not get empty near the lower sides, because it has to cover a short and awful wall.
i thought about Palis Biron, or Rhapsody in Blue, or Blue for You or Reine de Violettes, and even a Purple Skyliner or Perennial Blue, but I don’t know which of these does or doesn’t get empty below, so I need the help af you all, if you have or had one of those roses. Thank you!
Blue for You can be pruned so you can have large amounts of flower at all levels, and can be any height, but will tend to be tall after five or so years. It is a good repeater too. It will fill a space with fragrance @dabolem . At the moment my Blue Moon and Twice in a Blue Moon are too young to say, but I doubt they would give the cover you want. Have come on holiday, visiting lots of lovely gardens, brought my good camera but... left the memory cards at home! Grr
I did this last year when we visited David Austin gardens too.
