Good morning everyone. Another day with a red sky dawns.
An interesting 'brochure was pushed through my door yesterday telling of 'The Vintage Cash Cow Roadshow' which is coming to my village on March 1st. An antiques and collectibles roadshow. No fees, no commisions - cash paid. I might have to see if I've got anything I can take. Inside the brochure mentions old pens, costume jewellery, precious metal items, coins, toys, militaria and all the usual things. It could be quite interesting.
Cacoethes: An irresistible urge to do something inadvisable
Thank you all about care for me, I'm well. I had many thing on my mind last few days, but nothing serious. Also got one short message on this forum which gave me to think a lot about it. What to say about the weather last two days. Wind, snow and very cold. It's stopped all my work outside. One small good news is that my old tomato seed sprouted and I'll again have more than twenty new plants to grow. Now is time for tea.
Hello all … we have a lovely sunny morning here in Norfolk ☀️
@Ladybird4 … just thought I’d mention that an antique dealer family member once acted as a valuer for one of those antiques and collectibles ‘cash roadshows’. They use the word roadshow to give an air of respectability by linking to the tv programme.
He was disgusted and said never again. He was not allowed to offer what he considered (after a lifetime in antiques) to be a fair price for the good stuff, and jewellery was just valued for the weight of the gold … nothing for the stones etc … because everything was going to be melted down. They would say that the stones were valueless, had an unfashionable cut etc. He said in his experience that was completely dishonest. He said he heard folk saying things like ‘I don’t mind parting with it if it’s going to someone who’ll appreciate it,’ but the truth was they were giving less than scrap value … because that’s what was going to be done with it and they’d take a big cut. You can get scrap value for gold by taking stuff to most good jewellers … yiu don’t need a ‘roadshow’ … Quality collectible fountain pens etc were dismissed as ‘rubbish’ and the person was invited to ‘chuck it in this box … we’ll get rid of it for you’. At the end of the day the valuers would sort through the ‘rubbish’ and take out the good stuff 😡
So be aware (I’m sure you are) … they’re not necessarily crooks, but do they misrepresent the truth? Yes, some of them certainly do. They started doing it when ‘door knocking’ was banned. You wouldn’t sell to a door knocker so why to these charlatans? (Sorry - rant over).
So enjoy yourself but keep your wits about you. 😊

Morning everyone, The sun is shining at the moment, but it's still a bit chilly. @Ante30 good to see you, sorry you've had a lot think about, hope everything is ok now. Hope the message on the forum was a kind one. Best wishes to you Ante. Hope the weather improves, glad your tomatoes are starting to grow. Have a few bits and bobs to do today and also put some cloth things in Lilys TV. @debs64 glad you had a good day at work yesterday. @Ladybird4 Thank you, we had a lovely day. Think I'll have a another cup of tea 😉
@Ladybird4 I was going to send you a PM and mention some things of what @Dovefromabove has just posted and totally agree. There are lot's of jewellers that will buy gold/silver etc. Unfortunately some of those only go by weight and don't include price for diamonds/gems.
Hi, got to hand over my allotment key today and then we are going for a meal with fiancé’s family to commemorate his Dads death. It’s been 2 years. Not really my sort of thing but if it comforts his mom.
@Ante30 I too hope the message was not upsetting for you especially as recent events will no doubt be an additional worry for you. Can’t talk politics on here but have been so upset by events in Ukraine.
