Shane MacGowan may well have gone to Public school, but he did so on a scholarship, not because of his parents wealth, and he was expelled after 2 years, so I think he was for real.

I don't doubt that but many 'working class rebels' could only afford to drop out and rebel because they had wealthy parents supporting them.

I tried to drop out when I left school at 16. I took a couple of days to 'chill' and my dad made it plain that either I got a job or got out. I did manage to get down the beach once I think.  Just think I could have been some cool surfer dude .... or under the pier. Life is odd how it plays out eh?
Luckily I never stopped working after that (and loved what I ended up doing) until my wife became ill.

The kid's outdoor toys are all stacked neatly for the winter but I'm not putting up with this thing staring in the backdoor until spring :#

I serviced the car today. It's the first time I've serviced this one but it's got to that stage of life where official service history isn't going to help its value. It was really nice and easy to work on and a full service (4 filters and oil) only needed £63+VAT of parts and took about an hour. I checked back to see the details of the last service though and that one cost me £120.56+VAT in parts and £79.50+VAT labour for the same amount of work. It's a family run garage that I've used for about 10 years so I'm a bit annoyed that they over charged me. It's not a huge amount but I take both cars there and it adds up if they do it every time.

Many garages have fixed prices for servicing so I wouldn't be too hard on them, even if the price breakdown seems high to you.  I still use the main dealer for my services and thankfully haven't had cause to use them for any repairs.  Their hourly rate is nearly £150 per hour for labour.
  • @wild edges  I'm impressed that you could do your own service.  I used to work on my motorbike,  and cars decades ago, but even though our older car is 17 years old I've often joked that I  wouldn't know where to begin with it.  There's about an acre of bits to take off before you could get near the engine,. It would take me an hour to  remove and replace those parts, let alone do any work.

I know folk will probably think I’m being pedantic, but I don’t get why some folks call the area of their garden where they grow fruit and veg an allotment.

An allotment is a specific piece of land on an area not attached to a house and rented to allotmenteers by a local authority or other body … there are planning and other regulations that have to be kept to. https://www.nsalg.org.uk/allotment-info/

I grow fruit and veg in the garden attached to my home … I call that part of my garden my vegetable garden or vegetable patch.

Is it just me being curmudgeonly?

Once our cars got out of warranty, OH would do all the servicing himself. Saved not only money, but the hassle of driving the car across town, and having to twiddle our thumbs for the day.
However, he is definitely too creaky now for the crawling on the floor needed, even for an oil change, and some of the work needs specialist tools or access to a computer to ‘communicate’ with the car. Luckily, we have found an independent garage that specialises in Audi cars, and they’ve been really good. Much cheaper than the main dealer, much more flexible with drop off / pick up times, and you get to speak to the actual mechanics.
