Surely with Trojans and that kind of thing( the computer savvy will know the correct terminology - I don't), switching off might not be as easy as you think. I'd still go with a swipe from a hammer. A real one
We had a robot dispenser at one point in one of our pharmacies but it was disposed of fairly quickly when more time was spent fixing the errors it made than was saved. To be fair to the robot the errors were mostly caused by human mistakes. I was just waiting for it to Kill someone, as all robots do eventually. Has film and tv taught us nothing!
Surely what we have now is AS, Artificial Stupidity.
I know that we hold politicians accountable for so many things (and indeed, that is true to some extent), but firstly, they are only human, like us, secondly, many of the things that occur are, and have been, beyond their control, and thirdly, it is we, the electorate, who placed them in their positions of responsibility.
If we then choose to elect a different bunch of people, then don't expect them to be any better than the current bunch. After all, remember what was said by the outgoing Labour party members responsible for the country's finances!!
And which party approved the building programme that used the dodgy concrete process?
AI isn't 'vastly more intelligent'. It can be stopped at the flick of a switch. That isn't to say that it isn't extremely dangerous in the wrong hands.
I would also question the claim that AI can do things better. Many repetitive tasks can be done faster and cheaper by automation, but AI still has to be taught. So even when operating autonomously it has the same, if not higher, risk of making the wrong decisions based on wrong assumptions. The human brain is more likely to pick up on those errors faster than a machine.
Did you watch the BBC iHuman program? I would guess from your reply that you haven't. Listen to what the experts and the designers of the initial neural networks say - then see if you still think the same. How many time in human history have we stopped learning and stopped intelligence - even when we burned books? What happens when a machine, that teaches itself in ways we no longer understand, has access to all the knowledge that man has accumulated over millenia. A machine(s) that works on 'big data'?

I suspect what we have is Real Stupidity. Terry Pratchett observed that real stupidity beats artificial intelligence every time. I'm not sure if that's true but if it is, we should be fine

When did humans stop learning ? Where to start ? A generalisation of course but we haven't yet learned about the stupidity of going to war or how to take responsibilty for our actions whether on a personal, political, national or international basis. We have yet to learn that male and female are equal despite the fact that one wouldn't survive long without the other. Neither have we learned to sort out the planet we live on before embarking on endless moon landings by all and sundry. That's just for starters - perhaps the AI experts really need to come up with something to inject a bit of intelligence ( or even common sense ) into the human race first ? Hmm - that could lead to us being Micro chipped I suppose Oh well, as has been mentioned before, there's no easy answer. A basic Curmudgeon - too damn hot today
Just before the Bank Holiday my wife ordered a repeat prescription in the knowledge that it takes up to 2 weeks to action. Today we checked to see if it had been approved yet and there was nothing on the system to even indicate it had been requested. Every previous request has shown from day 1 as 'awaiting approval'. As there was nothing we raised another request and I followed it up by visiting the surgery asking for the request to be treated as urgent. The very nice lady on reception looked on her system and then went of to check. She came back and informed me that the original request had been received but it doesn't always show on the system, and that I shouldn't have raised another as it doubles their work. I asked her how I was supposed to know the original had been received as there has never been a problem before. She suggested phoning to check but gave up when I said I've spent over half an hour in the past on the phone trying to get through to the surgery on the phone. At least I know the prescription request is being actioned today!

Some might say we have already done that.
