The one positive thing I will say about organised religion is that they created some incredibly beautiful buildings. On the down side, how much better would the population have faired had the money been spent on them?
The money was spent on them @KT53, in a manner of speaking. The Church paid for all those stone masons and carpenters and tilers and artists to build and decorate the churches and cathedrals. Up until Henry VIII, those churches also tended to the poor and the sick, feeding, clothing and caring for them.
Not that I'm defending all the bigotry and worse that they still inflict on women, other religions, creeds and races. I love to visit churches and admire the ingenuity and artistry of mankind but not the machinations or organised religion.

"The price good men (and women) pay for indifference to public affairs is to be ruled by evil men (and women)."
Yesterday a neighbour from round the corner came to see us about using some of our paddock for his dwarf goats and some geese. He was accompanied by his pa and two sons which was fine.
However he made 2 faux pas. I answered the bell at the gate and let them in and then took them round to find OH who was messing in the garden. "Voilà le chef" he said, on sighting OH. Ha! The other was to come by car - their front gate may be on a different road but it's all of 250metres away.
